As a serial BMW owner I was looking forward to seeing some interesting vehicles this year (that were heading for production in the near future)

There's been that vision 100 concept and from a quick google a limited edition 7 series.

Have I missed something? Where is the i5 Tesla model 3 killer or a proper sports car?

As a new BMW owner I was surprised to find them celebrating a centenary this year as (a) the origins of the company are much earlier (e.g. Decauville Voiturelles made under licence) and (b) their country was half-way through a war in 1916.
Must try to see what it's all about sometime.

I went to Gaydon last weekend and saw a BMW Dixi from the 1930s - to be fair if that was the BMW product of the era I wouldn't rush to celebrate 100 years of the BMW!

By the way I am not biased - I have 2 BNMWs at the moment!

The Dixi you'd have seen at Gaydon was an Austin Seven made by Dixi (mirror image of a real A7, but otherwise the same) and although not everyone thinks much of the A7, it was part of the route to better things for many companies.
The original firm that became Dixi was at Eisenach and, as I said, produced Decauville cars under licence (as the Wartburg, named after the local castle where Luther translated the New Testament). Post-war it became Dixi and was taken over by BMW in 1928. I suppose the Centenary is of the Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke of Munich, re-named as Bayerische Motoren-Werke in 1922 when making aeroplanes was prohibited by the Treaty of Versailles and they concentrated on engines - and thence motorcycles.
