By the wonders of YouTube.

You should be able to hear a sort of whiney noise throughout that follows the revs. happens when static and in neutral also. Only noticed it recently.

N54 6AT with about 70k on the clock.

Is my gearbox on the way out or am I just paranoid?

Firstly, if it happens in neutral it's not a gearbox fault, as only the clutch/flywheel are spinning at that point.

Alternator clutch can get a little noisy as it goes, makes a sort of high pitched whine.

It's an auto, so bits and bobs will be spinning to some extent.
OP you can't hear anything from the clip, apart from the mic/phone/whatever rattling about and some mic hiss.

First port of call if you suspect an AT is to change the fluid if it's not already been done.

Hi,

I have this on my 2006 330d auto (73K), can hear it from about 1600-1800 rpm, not sure if it carries on up the revs as it gets drowned out by the engine, I posted a similar question up on E90post.com, long story short, general consensus was that some do it some don't (different models too), doesn't seem to be detrimental to the car (no exploding turbos), I've had mine for 2 years now and it's always done it.

Check out E90post.com, good forum with plenty of knowledge.

I get a whine about that range too, think it's diff. Only when cold.

It's an n54 with decatted downpipes - those are just lambda sensors throwing errors. I can get my JB4 to clear them but it reminds me to check every so often for anything else.

You need to turn your speakers up - I just checked - it's a clear mechanical whining that follows revs. You can only notice it at low speeds because otherwise it gets drowned out by the raspy goodness and turbo whine.

I've bought the bits and will be changing the trans oil this week, see if it makes a difference.

Tried e90post, they said change the trans fluid and check again. Cheers for any assists.
