All,

Curious for some thoughts on purchasing a Cayman 981S (PDK) - I would ideally like to pick one up soon, but with the 718 dropping soon I'm not sure if I should hold off for a few months till a few more start hitting the market. Plus I would think there are quite a few people coming to the end of their 3 year PCP deals, who could be looking to change or chop in cars soon.

As always the OPCs are holding the majority of the stock and keeping prices high - I am wary about missing out on a car with the right spec vs holding off and kicking myself for not being more patient.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

If the right car comes up buy it, it's that simple imo.

+1. You could spend forever thinking 'they are going to get cheaper' and they will but you've missed out in the mean time.

Also if there is a premium on 981's now then it's likely there will be for some time so either you'll be waiting a long time or the premium will still be there when you come to sell.

Agree

If the right car pops up best buy it

I am looking for a 987 car for a friend and missed two great cars for the sake of £500

Now realise they go very quickly if they had the right spec

Personally don't think (financially) it's a good time to buy, BUT there are so many spec options that finding the right car for YOU can take months, so if you want a particular spec and wait until the market settles down after the 718 introduction you could wait a looooong time.

Cheers guys, usually I'm in the Just buy it camp, but struggling with this purchase.

Any views on the level of discount available off the advertised price on used cayman from a OPC? I expect the it will be 2 or 3 years old.

Hi, I'm in a similar position. Been watching the prices since last October-ish and they've barely moved. I've now got a few more pennies saved up and am thinking more and more that it's time to just buy one. I've got a few particular spec requirements in mind which is making it quite hard to find exactly what I want though. (The most challenging requirement of all is wanting one that's not black, white, grey, or silver.)

I've also found that when a good one does come up they are going *very* quickly, so it's got to be time to start getting braver and get on the phone quickly when I see one, I think.

I searched long and hard for my 981 S, keeping an eye on Autotrader, Pistonheads & Porsche Approved... It wasn't getting much work done. The car I wanted with the options I wanted wasn't coming up...
I decided I'd go on s wider more general search, Porsche 981 Cayman S for sale. This dredged up more cars for sale and cars with Indie specialist. I found a massively optioned CS at a specialist. Had it a month now.
Personally, as I was buying previously enjoyed and not new I didn't set my heart on a particular colour but I knew the options I wanted.
I really fancied Racing Yellow. There's a lovely one on Autotrader now but not the required options. White, metallic blue and silver, a colour I never liked but saw a silver Cayman at my local OPC and to my surprise it looked great.
Black I didn't want. Difficult to keep looking nice, interiors are usually black and usually optioned with black wheels... Hell no!
Now I have a Basalt Black CS. 20" Carrera Classic's, all the required options plus more and the clincher, amber leather interior and sports plus seats. With decent wax on the car it's proving not as difficult as I thought to keep looking tip top.
Sometimes it's where you look that throws up that gem of a car.

Good shout on widening the search, but it does add the complication of having to get the car checked and warrantied by a OPC (depending on age).

My plan is - if I do find one privately or at a indie, to get it checked at a local OPC to give it a clean bill of health and know that I can get it warrantied when required.

I have seen some prices starting to drop - but I think their either high mileage cars or a case of people waiting for the right spec to come along.

OPC warranty is another thing that's been worrying me about buying from an independent. I'm not sure how much it'd cost and how worth it it would be, etc.

How do you feel about Sport Chrono? I've for some reason convinced myself it's quite important but I don't really know why, aside from 0-60 bragging rights. Is it generally considered desirable enough to have a tangible effect on future resale value? A lot don't seem to have it, so I'm guessing it wasn't considered worth the cost when people were speccing them new.

On the PDK it includes dynamic engine/gearbox mountings, which alongside PTV work pretty well imvho?

Not sure what it entails on a manual though?

The costs for a warranty are about £1600 for 2 years, not sure if that includes roadside assistance (think it does), but you would need to pay for a 111 check which is about £200 (iirc) so you're looking about £1800 all in and that's if no work is required i.e. said OPC gives it a clean bill of health, if work is required then it could be even more pricey.

Re sports chrono I'm not sure - don't all of them come with the "sport" button? Chrono gives you "sport+" which takes it up a notch and lessens PSM (plus not forgetting the stopwatch!). I think It was about £1200ish to spec, with the "sport" button I'm not sure if its necessary, if I was buying one new I probably would have gone with the sports exhaust instead.

The same dynamic engine mountings are there on the manual. You get rev matching in sports plus too. Does PDK get launch control with Sports Chrono?

Yes, though frankly I think it's the sort of gimmick you'd probably use once and then forget about.

My manufactures warranty runs out in September. I spoke to Porsche Solihull where my CS has all it's services.
The 111 point check is around £270 and 1yrs warranty £660. 2yrs £1200. The possible cost of anything thrown up by the 111 point check is a worry. I can't imagine the OPC not bending me over for something for the privilege of that warranty.
I have the Chrono Pack... it's so much more than just sport and a bit more. PSE, I have that too though I don't use when in general pootle mode. I think it's bit much for Colchester High street and such like but on the twisties it's a must. And in tunnels, well the inner child comes out, windows down... well it has to be done.

Cheers for confirming the numbers smile If yours has been looked after by a OPC it should be fine, I think its more of a issue if it hasn't or there have been any non porsche approved additions. Its pricey but I wouldn't go without, peace of mind.

Agree re PSE, it sounds amazing, especially when on the twisties. Certain options are such marmite, I wont buy one without PASM but some people hate it with a passion.

I think people may base their PASM preferences on the 987 - it's heavily revised on the 981 and superb IMHO.

Have to agree. Spent the weekend in Wales, and a friend in his Elise behind me was amazed how flat mine looked on the twisties, yet I was still perfectly comfortable. Well worth it on a 981.

Agree - but I think some are opposed to the principle of the car itself adjusting the way it behaves depending on the road and driver behaviour. Since it does such a brilliant job of it I don't care, and I can override it's occasional foibles since I am aware of what they are and when they might occur.
