The 100 year old wreck of a German WW1 U-boat will have a controlled detonation carried out on it tomorrow. Since its sinking the wreck has deteriorated to the point where a live torpedo now lies exposed

Made me think of this ticking time bomb in the Thames estuary, wonder if they'll ever do anything with it to neutralize it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Richard_Montgomer...

Absolutely bonkers really, there is live ammunition on 50% of the wrecks around our coast, I've seen live mines in launchers, torpedoes prepped in their tubes, shells, cordite, depth charges you name it... some of its deep and out of the way admittedly but if you want ammo diving is the way to see big stuff :-)

No need to guess what this was loaded with!

I think that one would take some rather expensive precautions to prevent damage if they tried to blow it up

Id be interested to know how they are going to detroy the explosives in the torpedo, with explosives, without detonating the torpedo explosives and triggering all the other explosives in the U-boat.....wobble

Have they removed the torpedo from the wreck and are detonating some distance away?

Given all but 3 of the crew went down with the boat I'd trust that the explosion would be a decent distance from what presumably counts as a war grave?

Given that the crews bodies won't exist I'd be surprised if respect for the dead was a principle concern for the UXB team or that the lives of anyone living would be in anyway risked for this purpose.

Hence if the torpedo is in the ship I doubt they'd touch it as it is best contained there, if it has come loose they'd just detonate it in place. I doubt that they would enter the vessel and then extract the UXB.

I guess lots of people in fluorescent vests and safety glasses also cleared everyone away withing a 3 mile radius for that.
