Hi all, just wondering if anybody has been experiencing timing chain noise on 520d m sport year 2012 ? My car is 3 1/2 years old and having only covered 28,000 miles but started to get a rattle from the back of the engine during the second year whilst still under warranty . Took it back to th supplying dealer who mentioned that the noise was within the parameters as set by BMW and was a comfort noise not detrimental to the engine . I recently took it back again to the supplying dealer who confirm that everything is fine but I did not budge this time . They carried out some repairs on the vehicle or change the guide rails and tensioners and guess what - the noise emanating from the engine has got worst ... You can hear the timing chain noise as if it is running loose or has got some play in it . Not sure what to do next .Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you .Nei 52

N47 timing chain issue...by the sounds of it they only did the easier chain which then stresses the others, to do all the chains means removing the engine from the car, I would get it back to them ASAP as other wise you could be looking at lunching the engine.

Many thanks Ninja59. You will not believe they already took the engine out and they had the car for 5 days but my opinion as you guessed they opted to do the easy job. Stupid on their behalf but that is BMW these days . Car is definitely going back . Will keep you posted . Cheers

Hi Folks , would any of you guys know an independent BMW consultant engineer please ? I will be meeting BMW technical manager soon and I am pretty sure that this individual will be fobbing off re issue as he represents BMW after all. Hence , I want to take this issue further by getting an independent report . I intend to take legal actions against BMW . Any help is much appreciated. Thx, Nei52

Nei52 I know it doesnt help but just as a heads up in sept 2014 I had a conversation with Bill the service manager at Elms Bedford. He knew all about the 2012 noisy Chain issues ,got a piece of paper and sketched what they have done SINCE to sort the problem out ,I did a lot of nodding sagely but didnt have a clue really and cant remember now ,but there were deffo issues on 2012 N47 Engine. He actually said to me its only now(sep 2014) he would spend his own money on an N47 engine.
Good Luck with this. My 120d was scrapped still feel very bitter about that and will be out of the BMW loop as soon as I can Ultimate Driving Machine ??? A Ford Mondeo will do me next time, was a passenger in one yesterday really liked it the interior was great as wellplus thousands cheaper.

Hi Smashy, many thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear abt your 120d and u r absolutely right that the so called BMW premium brand has gone downhill ... Efficient dynamics implies rattling engine after two years !! As for the info from elm bedford thanks for sharing. I hope to convince BMW to change the whole timing chain works for me . In my case , initially they said it is normal on three occasions and then I refuse to back down on the last occasion . Engine was removed and they only change the guide rails and tensioners . One improvement that I have however noted is the the rattling noise is more evident on a cold engine . Last drive was for around 50 miles and the open the bonnet , no rattling noise . Not sure why ? Anyway, solicitor has already been instructed and all parties have two weeks to sort this out. Will let you know of the outcome ... Hopefully a positive one , fingers crossed . Rgds , Nei52
