Does that last paragraph already say pretty much that - the GT3R was built almost in its entirety at Weissach?
Weissach has always been involved in the GT street cars thats where Preuninger is based. Just to confirm I think the 996 GT3 is a great car regardless of where it was built!! It was a bit of trivia I always used to others that the 996 GT3 road car was built at Weissach it just seems that there is some evidence suggesting it wasn't. I didn't know til recently the Carrera GT was built at Leipzig!
Actually imo being built away from the main production line quite possibly means that the cars are as an average built worse as there's going to be more variability between production as people always tend to get better doing the same thing over time so as a whole the cars out of the main factory are going to be better built...

Thanks for the info berty37 thumbup

For years 996.1 owners have smugly pushed out this myth as a sign of its 'proper' motorsport heritage as opposed to the 996.2, and therefore why it will be the one to have for proper enthusiasts. Bunkum.

I don't know that anybody is smugly anything ... ??

Smugly is a PH rubbish line IMHO ..

I ask only from what I was told by Tony Hatter, personally.

As an aside, I also own a 2002 GT3R ... win win ... in the smug stakes.

But actually, I'm just really interested in their design and R+D process at the time.

I wasn't referring to you.

But back in the day when 996GT3s were the current car, that Weissach myth kept being trotted out as the trump card by MKI owners on here and on PCGB forums. Whenever MKII owners regaled about how much better their cars were because of the synchros and gearbox oil cooling etc etc. It wasn't even friendly banter, it got ugly at times.

Thanks for clarifying and apologies for the assumption ...

(To mention nothing of the brakes that were inevitably upgraded for any serious track use !)

I used to own the 993RS development car and researched the development process from the log book the came with the car --- eventually proving that I was entitled to keep it --- but Porsche were incredibly helpful in helping me to flesh out the story as much as I could. That whole Weidekind / Lagaay / Hatter / Pinky Lai transition with first the 993 based GT1 and the the transition to the 996 based GT1 was magic.

It is reputed that prior to the Weidekind kaizen manufacturing process changes, Porsche were within 24 hours of going bust ....

When we talk about the quality of the air-cooled cars, they were truly too expensive to manufacture for the market segment to which Porsche aspired -- the 2+2. We may now lament the modular "light weighting" --- but they are back in business --- and willingly warranting all the track day use I give my GT4 --- with extended warranties to 15 years ! For me, that's class.
