I'm just looking into something which might be worth buying but will require a HGV to transport (just a regular articulated lorry + box trailer, not a flatbed). Does anybody know very roughly how much it will cost to get one for around 3 hours loading, a journey that will be just a whisker under 500 miles then 3 hours unloading. Our bods would do the loading/unloading. If I was to guess I'd say probably £2,500 upwards. I've really no idea how accurate that would be.

Sounds a little dear to me at that, I'd guess £1500.

I'm guessing you're moving something the length of the country,

The key question is: is it time critical, does it have to shifted by a certain time/date.

If not, look for transport companies at your destination point and then ask them if they want a return load from the collection area.

I've heard of lorries waiting 2/3 days in order to get a return load.
BTW transport folk moan worse than farmers.

thanks for the suggestions. It's not a particularly serious enquiry at the current moment but I'm glad to hear my estimate isn't unreasonably low.

If it was something I was probably going to book soon then yes but I'm really just after a ballpark figure without wasting a haulier's time.

Don't think 2.5k is realistic but depends if you have to pay half load empty rate.

I am a freight forwarder and your thinking is way too much. It really depends in collection and delivery locations and whether the haulier can pick something up for a return. But between £800 and 1200 would be fine
Subject to not ending up in some isolated spot.

I recently paid £800 for a full palletised load from Dorset to Norfolk, 270 miles. £2,500 sounds way too high.

I know a lot of haulage companies work out of newton abbot and Scottish depot(Glasgow) as well so not a difficult task

I would contact a few local ones to you and ask for a price. (they can deliver to Newton Abbot, collect you equipment, night out, make delivery and get a backload to base, maybe another night out)

I used to pay about £900 for a up and down from the midlands to Glasgow with no backload by haulier which in your case they would run back empty. (this was about 6 years ago so I would say a realistic price should be around 1500-1600 (add £450 for Devon bit and bit on top) with the haulage company getting a back load which would be £300 for them. Remember you are doing them a favour haulage is flooded with haulage companies, so lots of competition.

Or try a few Scottish depots, you don't want to hire a driver and lorry, you just want a standard load.(As long as not hazardous)

Should be no more than 1k from a transport company, waiting time is around £40-£50 per hour.
