Hi people,i'm having a bit of trouble hard wiring a dash cam into my 2011 BMW as every thing keeps turning off. Permanent live and earth is sorted but has anyone used an ignition generator to overcome the sleep mode as I need this for when the camera is in park mode? Any info would be useful. Cheers

I wired a Transcend DP200 into mine using a 12V to 5V USB mini transformer mounted behind the interior light. To get it to run after the ignition was switched off I was thinking about fitting a USB battery pack up there inline with the 12v-5V transformer which would charge during use and carry on when the ignition was switched off. A 2200mAh battery (pretty standard size) would run my camera for 2 hours, assuming it uses all of the 1A that the original 12V power supply was rated at.

Just reading your message again and it seems you're using a permanent 12V not ignition switched. Why?

HI, the camera I'm using is a Blackvue with smart power and needs switched and permanent 12V.The cam only works for 20 minutes then stops and when I tried to piggy back off a fuse it threw up error codes and the mil illuminated. Thanks for your answer I will look into it. Cheers.

It sounds like your camera has a built in timer which shuts it down after a period of time (seemingly 20 minutes going off what you are saying) when it senses that the ignition has been switched off. This is why it needs a permanent and ignition feed - so that it can both stay on, and also know when to initiate the shutdown timer.

It definitely sounds like you need to find an ignition switched live somewhere, obviously not one that breaks something else further down the line - there are some up behind the interior light as that is what I used, you have to splice into a loom as the cables are tight.
