what is the alternative wiper motor for the late S1?
Discussion
Hi Mick, is yours a crank arm type? If so I found a Peugeot 405 motor was easy to adapt and gave 2 speeds and intermittent. On the big old Peugeot it was situated under the scuttle outside the screen on the drivers side so quite easy to get at. I would assume several large Peugeots had the same one.
The original was AC Delco and unobtainable. My local auto electrician looked at repairing the old one but it had corroded and wasnt viable. Water had leaking in the first wiper pivot point and come down the arm into the motor.
If I remember rightly it was dead easy to convert but I had a bit of fun sorting out which wire went were! Surprise...they weren't the same colour scheme! Good luck.
While you are the breakers look out for K11 Micra rear wiper arms as well.

The later cable system is a lucas system which is readily available from the likes of Holdens, Europa etc. The motor is pretty standard across lots of cars with the only difference being the teeth on the spindle wheelboxes and the interchangeable crankwheel thingy in the motor which adjusts the travel. I got a full replacement set from Gerald TVR from one of his broken cars to put into mine as I still currently have the cranks and rods system fitted to the early cars and it's rubbish ! The spindles have to be perfectly square otherwise there's a huge amount of stress through the system resulting in the spindle tearing it's way through the fibre glass. The spindles themselves look like they have been made from some galvanised electrical conduit couplings, not brilliant !
I think Neil at ML Performance can supply all the bits but generally the motor should be a two speed unit already with the park switch. Holdens do have a good description of how the put a system together on their website as they are geared towards building kit cars etc.
From memory the wheelboxes have different amounts of teeth but Neil will be able to help if you need them.

Couldnt agree more! I managed to get the crank system working 'adequately' with a Peugeot motor and a lot of engineering but it is ripping itself apart again. In the heavy rain in Belgium, on 2 speed, I noticed the speedo was moving! The whole body was moving slightly in time with the wipers!!! It is coming adrift again...winter work and a cable system to be introduced. Complete dash out again!!! I WILL get this S1 sorted. If it still doesn't work properly with all the wires attached then replace the park switch, http://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk/lucas-type-5...

is the connector that should be on there instead of that mess
