Evening all, looking into purchasing an e63 m6, due to my budget it will be an early one, an '05 or '06 model, but reading up it seems the pre '07 models had issues with SMG software failure, and bmw did a fix/update in 2007 of which the cars are much better. Does anyone have any additional info or first hand experience/knowledge on this? Any input from previous or current owners much appreciated, as unfortunately if I want a low-ish mileage example, it will be an early model.

Many thanks in advance.

Where abouts in the country are you?
If you are near NW London, I can point you in the direction of a man who can go through all your questions.

Can't help you with the upgrade to SMG but I was advised to buy low mileage and get a warranty by my local BMW indie. It was excellent advice!!

Good luck with your search

Many thanks, I will definitely be getting a warranty, and will get as low mileage as I can within my budget.

To clarify, there have been zero significant changes to the any portion of the SMG across any year with the exception of programming changes in the SMG module and the OE supplier of the module itself.

The problems which have presented over the years on the early models are just as likely on the later ones, but knowledge and understanding of the box have increased significantly (well, outside of dealers anyway) reducing repair costs.

Yeah, from what I've read it was only software changes/updates.
Thanks for the info.

If it offers any reassurance I took my 2006 e63 to 165k miles and although the clutch needed replacing at around 90k I had no real software issues. But perhaps that was because of regular local BMW main dealer service over that time period.
