I have a 3 yr old 5 series which I'm trying to use my music off my phone.
USB only charges the phone I've bought a Y cable which does work on AUX but limited controls.
Any other options?
Thanks

You say you've "bought a Y cable". Have you tried using the stock white cable that comes with your iPhone?

The reason I ask - I used to have a 2007 5 series, which needed the Y cable for the iPhone to operate properly. When I bought a 2013 5 series, this was no longer required and the standard iPhone cable was all that was needed.

Standard lightning cable charges the phone only. USB on dash greyed out.

OK, in that case...

- Have you got the latest software on your iPhone? (which iPhone is it?)
- Have you got at least one of the following options: 6FL, 6NH, 6NK, 6NL, 6NS or 6NR. Use http://www.bimmer.work/ to check your VIN number.
- Have you updated your car software to the latest version? http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/connected_drive_s...
- Lastly, have you tried another lightning cable?

Argh... sorry, you may be out of luck with solely that option - and you may be limited to the aux input only as it stands. frown See this page for alternatives: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=...

I just bought an e70 x5 LCI that missed the combox build date by 3 days! The combox is the hardware option that allows you to stream music via Bluetooth, use the USB with your iPhone cable for direct connection to iDrive, use all the online options and lots of other stuff that's fairly pointless.

Anyway, I'm having to deal with the same issue you have. This is a good low down http://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69...

In a nutshell:
What nav/audio do you have?
What phone are you using?
Is the Y cable genuine OEM?
Do you have/need the Apple 30 pin to lightning adapter?

Because, having read about this stuff for almost two days now, you should not have any functionality issues with the OEM kit.

I've got an iPhone 5s and bought the 30 pin adapter just in case. Cooper Thames Ditton are letting me test all their cables this weekend but I'm hoping I will be able to use the lighting Y cable without the 30 pin adapter so I don't lose quality under translation from digital to analogue output.

Hi,
Business professional I think,
Latest software update in the car,
iPhone 5,
eBay Y cable which plays music but no control on I drive,
Lightning cable

So I think it's one of two things based on your feedback.

1. Either the eBay kit is crap and you will need to spend some cash to get the OEM one. By all accounts this seems to cure the problem as the OEM Y cable has an extra chip inside to allow proper control of iDrive.

2. It could be that you don't have the necessary options (think you need 6NR BMW apps) to use the Lightning connection on the Y cable and need to buy the Apple 30 pin to Lightning adapter. Again, people in your situation have seen the issue resolved when they've bought one.

Is there any way that you can test some cables at a local dealer to be sure?

The answer is going to vary based on what you've got fitted and nothing has really explained that so far.

Does the car have a big screen or a little screen?

If I bought the official Y cable what does it give me over what I have already described?

Possibly a working solution biggrin When I worked for MINI there were 2 versions of Y cable, one would only charge (basic bluetooth) and the other would allow other functions providing the car has the capability.

So you get sound but no control? Why would the Bluetooth device below be different?

Did it work?

I went to the dealer and non of the cables worked with my iPhone 5S. They all said 'not recognised' and I had no music or function.

I checked my VIN out here for compatibility: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/connected_drive_s... and it doesn't look good; only covered for audio up to an iPhone 4! It's all rather confusing because I'm sure software updates must support newer phones with the Y cable.
