I've had a Gti itch for a while that I think I need to scratch soon!
I would like to spend around £15k and wondered where your money would go.
I've always fancied a mk5 R32 but also like the look of the MK 6 edition 35, be interested to hear from anyone that has owned either of these cars.
A good low miler R32 may be getting harder to find now but I still love the look of them.
Any advice would be great.

There are quite a few 2013/14 Mk7 GTIs around £17k now, if one of those floats your boat.

I've owned a 2008 Mk 5 golf gti manual, a Mk 5 2008 R32 manual which had been supercharged to 370bhp and today picked up my second Mk 5 R32 2009 dsg completely standard. I've also driven but not owned a mk6 golf gti dsg. What would you like to know? 4 cylinder turbo charged golf's will be around for a while, so I would without doubt recommend you try the n/a 3.2 VR6, they are lovely cars, happy cruising or when pressing on. Your budget will get you a nice late sub 50,000 mile example. The gti's are good and tunable but don't really stir your senses in my opinion.

+1000!

The Mk7 performance golfs are seriously coming down in price now so you'd easily get a GTI in budget. Well worth it over any mk5/ mk6 IMO having owned all 3

My 15-plate GTD DSG is only worth £16/17k trade

Thanks for all the input, tough decisions to make!
I may persue the R32 route first as ive always fancied one, cant see them loosing too much value if you find a good one and keep it in first class condition.
Don't think id go anywhere near £15k for one though.

I would say try both, but 11-12k would get you unto a nice R32 and they do hold value well. The manual version is better for a more involving drive, but this is my first dsg so still getting used to it.

  • Find the best ED30, say £12,000
  • MK7 GTI now in range even at dealers (with a good one year warranty)
  • ED35, which should depreciate less compared to a MK7

I've got a standard mk6 GTi which I think is worth considering too. I thought about getting an R32 but the age and £500pa tax put me off.

Mk6 R might be in budget if you want 4WD or a bit more guts.
