I'm sure plenty of you dog owners have seen this before. Wilson has decided this week to kick into fussy mode and only eat his food if I SPOON FEED HIM!!! Now I'm not going to get tricked by my dog into hand feeding him; so what's the answer? I've even tipped his food out onto the grass and he still does his bobbing and weaving around it. The food is raw beef or tripe, both of which he usually loves.

Let him get hungry would be my advice. Dont leave food down if its ignored for more than 15 minutes.

Possibly heat realetd ? Its been preety hot this week.

Try not to pander to him. Unless very young pup or any medical issues preventing it he can go without food 24hrs. As mentioned use the 10 min rule.

If still not eating except with encouragement then vet check may be sensible but most will start to.

Again depending on age, growth rates etc may indicate a change in feeding habits.

Maybe he wants 'live' food like this lot at the bottom of the garden!

Try a different bowl?

I tried tipping the food out of his bowl, which was clean, straight onto the grass. Still he poked around the perimeter of the food with shoveling motions, but didn't actually touch it.
I will try the 10 minute rule & see how we go. He is changing a little right now though. He's just 1 year old & is starting to pee up everything, so maybe there are food preferences going on too?

THIS is the point where you lay down the law! If you don't, you'll be making a rod for your back!

This is poss, definitely but usually it has to happen much younger to cause issue, I would be tempted to think it's a bit of a teenage phase but it is also possible that at one point the tripe/ beef wasn't 'right' and consequently put him off.

It could also be lack of need. He has a bit of maturing to do but his biggest growth has been done so his energy/ nutritional needs are not the same as they were.

He's thinking...

'Those cows look familiar I'm sure I'm meant to do something now what was it my great, great Grand dad used to do with bulls?'

Joking aside is Wilson good with other dogs? A bit of healthy competition around the food bowl might stop him being so fussy?

As with our previous Bullies, Wilson loves another dog..but you wouldn't believe the amount of times he's not been loved back! Springers, Labs, Schnauzers...they've all had a pop!
I'll start offering it to the cats maybe, but I don't want him eating them to get it back.
I think hunger will be his enemy, so we'll see how that goes. This morning's beef has now gone back in the fridge, so I'll warm it back to room temperature later.

Has he started to eat yet? If he's still being a fussy bugger I'll send one or both of my mums' Staffs down for a couple of days. They'll empty Wilsons' food bowl in a nano second or two and he'll soon learn that feeding time is a competitive sport hehe

He's back in the game! Still a little apprehensive before getting on with it, but emptying the bowl pretty quickly. It's like the bowl had bitten his nose or something previously!

I should point out the name 'Wilson' was chosen because it's a name that can be shouted well in anger. Two syllables work very well during the daily bking...

I have a similar problem with my collie. He eats when he's hungry but at meal times if I'll sit next to him he'll eat it. Any sort of distraction, toys or me doing something and the food goes to the bottom of the list of priorities. Same with water too really, he's got a bowl of clean fresh water available, and as he's an active dog you can see him generating quite a thirst, but he'd rather carry on playing until he collapses than have a drink. Even with treats, he'll dump them and leave them until he's finished playing.

I'm on the verge of taking on a rescue dog to join him in my house, but meal times are going to be a nightmare, knowing my luck the new dog will be a greedy bugger and want to eat both of their meals. But maybe after a couple of days being hungry, he'll learn to eat his dinner fast!

I have a Lab.

I didn't even realise this was possible.
