We're off to Cuba in a few weeks, and although it's all-inclusive I'm hoping to bring back some rum either from the resort shop or some day trips out.

Now, I'm no expert on rum but I know what I like and don't like. The best I've tried is an El Dorado 15yr old, my daily snifter with coke is Appleton Estate, and the best dark I've had is Gosling's Black Seal but I've never tried a Cuban rum before.

Any recommendations that I should look out for?

Whilst on the subject of Cuba, cigar recommendations wouldn't go amiss either thumbup

You've never had Havana Club? Stock up on 1l bottles of Havana White 3 year and dark 7 year. £7 a bottle.

Bacardi is not cuban rum since the revolution.

Go for some of the premium Havana Clubs...they now have a variety if premium and super premium rums and they are excellent. The seven year old is a good basic rum to try.

As a mixing rum I used to quite like Havana Club Especial with coke, but these days drink my rum neat. El Dorado 15 is my everyday favourite. I was at a rum tasting last week and they had a Havana Club Union. Probably the best rum I've had. It was selling for about £250 a bottle though! If you can find it at a price you're happy paying, that would be my recommendation.

The White 3 year old Havana was about £3 a bottle when I was there. They gave us a bottle of the 7 year in our room at the hotel. Also good if you like cigars, the big Churchill style Cohibas and Romeo & Juliets for a couple of quid.

If you're interested in cigars a visit to the factory where they make them is good. Most of the hotels have shops full of them!

Actually, yes I have now you mention it. Once, in a bar on Paxos when they ran out of Pampero (another favourite of mine). I found it unremarkable to be fair. Although I'm sure a £250 bottle of Havana Club will be pretty special.

If the Europe vs Cuba premium holds the same for the expensive stuff as it does for the every day stuff, the Union may be more like £50-60 a bottle.

Well, that sounds a bit more palatable price-wise, especially after reading the tasting notes on the WhiskyCorner website

You can buy Havanna rum all over the place and its a lot cheaper than home. I bought back a bottle of 7 yr old. Very nice but to be honest this is worth a bash and iirc it was £5ish at the airport.
