My 05 golf 2.0tdi has been in garage twice in last 2 weeks. Injector 2 replaced, new air flow meter and new plugs. £500+in parts alone. Car is back and still lumpy on idle and very smokey. White to be precise but does smell like it is running rich. However it is losing coolant slowly with no visible signs. Nothing in oil etc. I have read about the issues with porous heads/cracked heads and Im beginning to suspect this. Not willing to put £1500 into a head change. Is there any other cheaper solution?

Unfortunately the PD diesel was not the VW group's finest hour; when they start going wrong they can need a set of injectors, a head, a turbo, tandem pump, EGR... the quality/durability are just not there.

If the car is a keeper bite your tongue and get it fixed but I'd be tempted to get what you can for it and put the money into something better. The 2.0 TDI 'CR/common rail' that replaced that engine is excellent.

Think I will stick it shed for now. Cost of repairs outweighs its value.

Take it down to a used car dealership and part ex it.

I had one give me top price for a Renault Clio with a crunchy gear box. They rarely test them properly.

Or do what a lot of people seem to do and sell it on eBay as excellent condition, drives like a new car.

Bringing it back to mechanic. He has had £520 off me. Considering he builds and races his own cars I expected him to know his stuff and sort it. Have another £1000 here so hopefuly that might sort it

1) Blocked EGR valve.
2) Failed EGR cooler (are they water cooled on these?)
3) Head or gasket failure.

Do a compression check first.

Cheers

I assumed he did a compression check. I dont think it has egr cooler. No water in oil so not sure it is gasket as much as cylinder crack.

Porous head. Got it diagnosed by VW. So Im gonna look around for an engine. It is a BKD. What sort of money would a complete cost?

VW are lying sacks of st. Porous head my arse. Old school mechanic took car last week and found leak in matter of minutes. Waterpump has been seeping for long time and is noticable when watching from beneath. He also said timing was out slighly causing misfire. And he found oil leak in transfer box. So new cambelt, pump and gasket seal on box should sort car out. And all for £450.
