We all hear about the bad stuff on these forums; how about some good.
Called into my local tyre supplier to ask them how much life there was left in my rear tyres on my RS. At the time total mileage was 5,600. After a bit of debate they decided that another 500 was feasible and would I like to order replacements. I declined and ordered them from my OPC (D.Lovett Tewkesbury).
With the mileage now at 6,080 today I have called into the dealership to have the tyres fitted. Alex the ever helpful service advisor took me into the workshop whilst my car was on a ramp and declared that there was no need to change them as I had at least 2000 miles wear to go!!! He so easily could have misled me but chose not to. I was so pleased by their honesty that I have paid for them (as they had got them in stock 'specially for me) which seemed the fair thing to do.
Nice one D.Lovett Tewkesbury. Yet another feather in your cap.

Okay, Digga snr had his Jaguar XF collected for service today. The garage just called to say that at 36,000 miles say Jaguar are not happy with the tyre wear on the Pirellis fitted are are replacing all four. For free.isaldiri said:
Shouldn't you be able to tell yourself whether your tyres need changing. .?
+1I'm pretty lazy these days when it comes to working on cars but even I can spend 10 seconds bending down and looking at the tread. That's actually still the lazier option as it's easier than driving to a garage for them to check

As I have bought 16 tyres in the past year (for other vehicles) from my local supplier I asked them to take a look when I was there on other business. Sometimes its good to have a (supposedly!) professional opinion - particularly on tyres that cost as much as these! What the OPC told me today was that these tyres have 6mm tread when new and now they have 4mm on the outside and 3.5 on the inside. The inside wear is caused by hard cornering
I'm sure lots of people will come on to say how they had to replace their tyres at far lower mileage. Indeed, the OPC told me of a customer with a 991 Turbo S who needed to replace all 4 tyres at 1,800 miles! From this we deduce 3 things: he is probably loaded, he probably looks very impressive pulling away from the lights and ... he probably drives like a tw*t!

inside edge is due to straight line motorway driving with too much neg camber , not cornering lolthe post is funny though when owners of these cars don't know when to fit new tyres !

1,800 miles sounds about right on a turbo for the rears TBH. Fronts should last a lot longer unless you are doing a lot of under-steering v8ksn said:
It may be easier but when you are at the garage anyway, you may as well get the car put up on a ramp and get them to have a look for you. Why not?
Indeed but I read it as the trip being specifically to have them check tread depth.robgt3 said:

Granted if you were driving past then why not but the post does come across as someone who has a little man to do such menial tasks even if that means a 40 mins round trip I only post in jest, I'm just jealous that I don't have an RS to check the tyres on!

what if the fitter said he was on threads !!! OP is very lucky there were 500 miles left in them imo.esp as the inners are wearing more due to all the straight line stuff ;p

I met Alex last week, a really nice honest guy. I was looking at a car they had and he went over the car with me in terms of its paint prep needs should i buy it.Called into my local tyre supplier to ask them how much life there was left in my rear tyres on my RS. I didn't buy it in the end but I'd be very happy to deal with Porsche Tewkesbury again as they were superb

I think you are being unfair on your local tyre guy, how is he supposed to know how much longer your Cup 2s (I presume they are) will last, there're so many variables that his 500 mile guesstimate was probably a conservative fair, safe opinion, he wasn't to know you'd be Miss Daisying for the next 2000 TB993tt said:

We are off up to Scotland very soon with six other like minded souls to take in the NC500 all told about 1700 miles. Tyres will be well shagged by then. Gassing Station | 911/Carrera GT | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
