Guys need a bit of advice re my 997.1 GT3 RS : only after (or during a long run) I get a rattle from the front end of the car . Top mounts ?? .... possibly but I think not, they look ok . Sounds more like an internal issue with the front shockers ..... it only happens when the car is hot after or during a hot run . I've got the car up on our ramps as we speak and would like it fixed once and for all . Cheers Barry

I have a similar thing with my c2 996. The noise I get is like a loose board rattling when going over a bump and only when car is hot. OPC have had a look and couldn't diagnose it. Love to find out whats causing it as it is irritating.

Job for Chris at Center Gravity. Will be top mount bearings, anti-roll bar drop links or damper rod bushes (most likely the latter if it occurs when hot)

I had the EXACT same issue, I spent a lot of money with no results, in the end it was the damper, something to do with the oil when it got warm, pair of new dampers fitted & problem solved

Brilliant ! .......I'm so glad that I've , at last, got a straight answer. I also posted this on the GT3 facebook page and there are loads of variations on what it could be. If you don't me asking what did you pay to get the shockers replaced ?

Thanks again for response.

The front dampers can be rebuilt. Speak to centre Gravity. They sorted it in a day and not horrendously expensive.

Barry, no problem, I was in this exact same situation & just got sick, I obviously had to fit a pair to do it properly, as it's just the damper it wasn't too bad, I don't have the bill anymore but it was certainly under a grand for the pair, fitted & geo re-set etc

I replaced my dampers after same problem with 997 GT2. Problem solved. I used a local porsche specialist to replace and then got OPC to set up geometry to my spec as it was going in for some other work. Saved me a little money that way.

Dear all

first of all i am so glad i found people with the same issues and in inquiries as mine . I own 3 911s two old timers including a 993 and a Gt3 gen1.
I experience the exact same problem as Por 911T described , an undefined metal noise in the front of the car after a good 30 min drive with a some intense driving. I visited twice the OPC in Greece and an independent garage. No answer , nothing . they told me is the joints that are made of metal with minimum use of rubber etc.
you suggest I should check my shock absorbers ? or my damper rod bushes ? or both
sorry to enter the exact same questions but it is my first time to enter a forum
thanks in adavnce

My 997.1 GT3 does exactly the same thing, after sitting on the motorway for an hour the front left knocks. Once cold it never does it until it sits on the motorway again. Doesn't even do it on track, just the motorway. Had reached conclusion it was inside the damper, so refurb planned this winter.

Your shock absorbers need refurbishing. Porsche centres are useless at diagnosing this problem.

Speak to David at Bilstein UK in Leicestershire.

dear Friends

I have written a letter about how useless OPCs are and send it to TOTAL911 magazine , along with a picture of my garage ( cars with number plates on ) , they published it , although that was not my intention , my intention was to help me with the problem we are addressing now. .
mine also when cold , makes no noise , but the noise appears more after driving a route with more turns than a motorway , but it exists after motorway driving but much later.
my cars has 50.000 km , i bought second hand before two years and I have put only 2000 km on it .
i will have then to check dampers and the whole suspension , but the question is where ?
thank you for the advice

Hi,

Have the same problem on a 997 C4S. Upgraded with Bilstein B16 Damptronics (clubsport version) and RSS arms. Creaks like hell whenever i turn the steering at low speed. Will be looking to get the dampers rebuilt at some point. Will update this thread (if i remember) when I get round to it.

Creaking when turning the steering wheel is more akin to top strut mounts / bearings . Ive had this on both my 996 C4's & my turbo . Could also been the lower suspension support arm also known as the 'tuning forks' due to their shape.
