Hi all.

For some strange reason I am still wanting to fit some BBS style wheels on my Chimaera.

Lenso alloys in the correct offset and colour seem to be like hens teeth at the moment, Calibre only do a 7x16 front rim so that leaves Dare wheels, I would love a set of genuine BBS RS wheels or even some Image ones but at nearly £4K for the former and pushing £3K for the latter both are out of my league.....

Whilst researching th ewheel options it has become apparent that tyres for our cars are becomung harder to obtain too. From the factory my car has 225/50/15 fronts and 245/45/16 rear tyres. The latter is apparently really too wide for the 7.5" rim.

I would be happy with 16" wheels all round, 225/45/16 on the front and the standard 245 on the rear. However, Lenso only do 7.5" rims with the correct offsets, Calibre only 7" rims and Dare do both 8" and 9" rims but only in ET25 and ET20 respectively. I think 9"x16" rims on the rear would look lovely but I don't think these would fit... In all honesty it looks like fitting 245/40/17 tyres on the back. Calibre do a 8"x17" wheel which would be ok although only a 7" wide front, Lenso an 8.5" rim which is still out of stock after three months and Dare do an 8"x16" front and an 8.5"x17" rear. The only thing with the DAre rear whell is that the offset is ET30. Has anyone fitted an ET30 8.5"x17" rim on the rear and an 8"x16" Et25 front rim to a Chimaera?

Tyre are another matter all together! Even a humble 225/45/16 front tyre is getting harder to come by and there are few makes that have matching rears in 245/40/17. Toyo do not do matching tyres in these sizes and the only ones I can find are the Yokohama AD08R. Has anyone used these? they look like a semi race tyre to me so my gues is they may not last long....

I am not a boy racer at heart I just like the classic look of the BBS rims but maybe I should just leave well alone! All comments appreciated thank you.

Regards Chris.

No issues with my Yokohama AD08R's regarding life. Unlike most semi track tyres they come with a full 8mm of tread new. I have done over 5k on mine with 6 track days, still got a bit of tread left.

If you get bored read my ramblings about them here:

You will probably get closer to 8k if you don't drive like a tit...

I got rid of the skinny looking 245 40 17' s for 235 45 17's .They look and feel much better .

I keep looking at these ,I like the deep dish .

These look nice ,just need a spacer for the rears.

My Chim runs Japan Racing R11's. Fronts are 8"x16" ET25 wearing 225/45 Toyo R888 tyres, no clearance issues but that's with 1.5 deg neg camber.
The rears are 8.25"x17" ET 25 with 235/45 R888's again no issues, but the car's geo and corner weighting has been properly set up with this combo
by the excellent Matt Smith.

I have a feeling that is the entrance to the Imperial War Museum at (former RAF) Duxford, near Cambridge

I have been running 17 inch wheels for ages now and like both the look and the ride.
215/45 17 fronts and 235/45 17 rears work well fit 7.5 inch wheels and are available in, for example, Federal 595 RSR or Uniroyal Rainsport 3. The Federal is a summer tyre that will handle rain and works well on track too, the Uniroyal works well in the rain and for normal road use.

The other advantage of changing to 17 inch wheels is that they will take almost any brake upgrade you care to mention.

I have a set of Lenso bbs alloys on my Chimaera 450. I have 16 inch rears and 15 inch fronts with the correct offsets. These wheels are made from a solid billet and therefore they can be drilled to any wheel stud pattern and any offset. I have had them for a good number of years now and they still look brand new and compliment the car very nicely.

Just a quick opinion which may seem obvious, when choosing tyres I would strongly recommend deciding roughly how many miles you are likely to cover in a 4 year period. Then choose a tyre that should last a little longer than this mileage (as a factor of safety), this should help to ensure focusing on traction rather than long life, as I would personally recommend changing tyres after 4 years or so regardless of mileage to avoid potential issues with degradation (perishing etc.).

All IMHO of course but why choose a tyre that will last for 30,000+ miles if the car will only cover 3,000 miles per year for example. I certainly wouldn't want to be driving in a spirited manner in a lightweight 300 hp sports car on 10 year old tyres.

For everyday road & wet track use I run Yoko AD08R 225/45/16 front & 255/40/17 rear with no problems whatsoever, and I'd concur with Matt's view on wear rate/expected life.

Thanks for all the information in this thread.

I've still not bought any wheels yet, the Lensos are apparently on their way from the manufacturer.......
I think I will need the 8.5" rears as I would like to keep the original 245 tyre size on the rear and would like the correct width wheel for the tyre. If Ace of Hearts wheels were 8.5" they would be gone by now....

Interesting comments about the tyres and I am leaning towards the Yokohama tyres. They were great on my old Westfield but at the time were the A520s. Out of curiosity do the 255 rear tyres cause any clearance problems?

Regards Chris.
