I've used GT One for that kind of thing. Near Chertsey.

Ok, the car is going into Kensington Autocare today - I did a bit of checking and they seem to know their onions.

It's on 61,000 miles now, and the original owner ticked a few options boxes on the order form:

C26 South African market vehicle
139 Seat heating, left
340 Seat heating, right
197 Stronger battery
220 LSD
222 Traction control ASR AntriebsSchlupfRegelung
224 Traction control ABD Automatic Braking Differential
288 Headlamp washer
326 Cassette-radio Becker Porsche CR-21 ROW
375 Two way electical sports seat, left
376 Two way electical sports seat, right
421 Front cassette compartment
426 Three spoke steering wheel
441 Radio preparation
446 Wheel caps with coloured Porsche crest
454 Automatic speed control
490 Sound system, MY2002-> Sound system Harmann analog
551 Wind deflector
563 Side airbags
567 Top tinted windscreen
573 Automatic air conditioning
692 6-disc CD changer Becker Porsche CDC-3
936 Leather rear seats
981 Leather dashboard and door panels
983 leather front seats

As long as the inspection gives it a clean bill of health I hope to finish the paperwork and transfer the money tomorrow.

I just spent lunchtime driving round Regents park in an early 996 convertible - amber indicator car.

Now of course we didn't reach the outer limits of the chassis at 25mph round the park, but there were no squeaks or rattles, and critically you can't see the back end when you're driving it.

I might get this as my first foray into Porsche ownership.

Can anyone recommend a Porsche specialist to check the car over who is in or near London?
With a German guy? If so pm me. It was my car...

Ok so I can see it was my old car. smile

Eta it's a Cyprus car btw.

Hah - small world, the service history had a few gaps but your big service in 2015 went a long way to answer my concerns on that.

Is it common for Cyprus cars to have a South African build code?

Could you give me your impressions of the car?

I'm afraid I can't work out how to PM you so I have (theoretically) emailed you instead.

And I've mailed you back. Car started life in Cyprus I seem to recall. Inside front cover of service book. But maybe I'm wrong?

My last bill for front discs (sebro) and pads (textar) was £350 all in.
Fitted? I've always paid £450-500 per axle depending on which specialist. What part of the country are you in?

North West and have always used Unit 11, Warrington. I think us Northerners would keel over in shock if they tried charging us what you're having to pay. biggrin

A little puzzled by the mix of options on the car - it's got ASR and ABD (both parts of what I think came to be called PSM), as well as an LSD - in my admittedly very small store of knowledge I thought that it was generally an either or, not both an electronic and a mechanical traction control system?

Happy to be told that I'm dead wrong.

I had a 996 with LSD and PSM as standard.

I must admit I didn't think you could have LSD and traction control. And how can you have an option code (490) that applies to MY2002 on a 996.1?
OP read the previous owners email. It looks and sounds like a nice car on the face of it, but check those option codes carefully.

I am not sure that is correct. My 996.2 3.6 is registerd late 2001 and is apparently a MY2002.

Who/where's the best Porsche Specialist if starting from SE23/South East London?

Had the results of the pre-purchase inspection back and it's a fairly troubling figure.

When I was searching for my first 996 (and Porsche!) in May of this year, the first car I test drove was a lapis blue C2 3.4 with savannah leather from the same company!

There was a lot wrong with the car and I'm glad I walked away.

I eventually settled on a 2003 C4 coupe. I had my PPI undertaken at Porschetech in NW3. I ended up with a pretty big bill (c £2.5k) to do all the consumables + a borescope which I paid but made a mental note to steer clear of London indies! They're pretty similar in price to an OPC if you ask me.

I now use Hillcrest in Nettlebed which is a bit of a trek but I've known the guy that runs it - Simon - for a while and periodic maintenance costs significantly less!

Worth holding out till the right car comes along - you'll only regret it if you don't once the shine wears off!

Good luck.

Thanks! And thanks for the info.

I'm tempted to give Precision Porsche a figure, a spec, and then leave them to it.

However, I know how impatient I am.

Have you sat in or driven a Targa yet? You'll either love the airiness inside or be "meh, it's just a big sunroof".. in which case you know your choice is between a coupe or cab.

The rear seats in a cab are very occasional (which put me off a mint C4S Cab I was considering at the time - I loved the look but it was too tight for my kids). If you want proper wind in the hair, a Boxster S is a much more compelling proposition IMO, but that subject's been done to death elsewhere!

Tip isn't everyone's cup of tea but drive it in manual and be aggressive with the throttle and it's much much better, you can even blip the throttle on downshifts if you time it right (mines a later Tiptronic S, I don't know what the earlier ZF boxes are like). Saying that if it's a weekend and track toy I'd go for a manual if I could.

Back to the Targa roof..the sort of person that worries about its possible achilles heels - roof cables going out of alignment, motors failing and leaks -arguably shouldn't be looking at a 996.2 (or 997.1) in the first place (too many things online to fret about!). Squeaks and rattles can be almost eliminated by occasional application of Gummi Pledge (rubber restorer) to the roof and hatch seals. As Paddy mentioned earlier there are some excellent specialists not far from you that know these roofs inside out.

You don't see many at track days but they're still fine handling, well balanced cars with superb steering feel and I personally haven't noticed any difference over a coupe or cab.

Hatchback is genuinely practical and I've had my road bike in there no worries, with both wheels removed. You could do the same in a coupe in theory but I'd worry about the front seat backs getting it in...

Try a Targa - they're great! And whatever you get, get a PSE or Gundo Hack done, you won't regret it :-)

My 98 C2 has LSD and traction control.

I'm just walking away from a dealer where I was looking at a Targa- £17,500, the rear deck was wet from the roof leaking, the blind mechanism was bust, trim was missing all over the place, no service book (mislaid), knob missing from the dash, scratches down the flanks. Are they intending on fixing any of this? No, price reflects the condition.

Yes, I was staggered. So I've just committed to buying the silver car and fixing everything that needs fixing.
