I didn't try a 997, my 996 is the narrow body C2, so it's quite small.

That's interesting - chap gave me a lift from Precision Porsche to the railway station, said one of the reasons he got the C4S was because there was more room in the cabin.

It was a member of the public who had just picked his car up from being serviced - he gave me a lift to the station as he was a very nice chap.

£5,995.71 is the invoice waiting for me tomorrow, my cost per mile driven (around 50 so far) is quite high.

Hopefully the mileage will now increase and the spending is over for a while!

Thankfully that includes £999 of VAT.

So I fitted a 997 lighter:

My 996 really does not enjoy stop start traffic (such as you find trying to get in or out of London), the temperature gauge goes from 85ish to close to 100- should I be worried by temps of 100?

I don't like seeing the temp get so far from its normal position.

Sounds like the low speed cooling fan resistors have failed - they are in a grotty position and frequently do this. What then happens is that the temp rises to the stage 2 fan threshold (direct connection, rather than in series with a resistor) and you'll hear them roaring at full speed. A quick test is to put the a/c on, you should hear the fans running at a gentle (quiet) speed at the front of the car..
Is this something that I could fix? It fits the observed symptoms exacty.

Thanks - I'll go for the genuine Porsche part, I don't cut corners on my cars.

I emailed the Indy garage about this, their response:

"What you have said, seems to be normal. Normal running temp is 80-90. The fans cut in at low speed stage 1 which you cannot hear inside the car. If your in traffic you will hear the 2nd stage to drop the temp back down to 80 ish.

Darren did not report the resistor not working. If you would like us to recheck then please let me know."

It's a little difficult to tell given the lack of graduations but I'd say the gauge shows a temp of over 90 - just below 100.

Is there a way that I can test the resistor without having to run the car down to Precision? They're an hour and a halfs drive, so I'd rather test myself if I can.

If this is normal then I'll stop worrying about it!

Once you've fitted the mounting points/brackets it's a thirty second job, fitting the brackets on an 18 year old car did require a trip to the tool box:

I was in the US for a couple of weeks, left the car at Heathrow using their "Meet and Greet" service as it was cheaper than standard long-term parking.

The drop off was fine, collection also, got home and saw that they'd reversed the car into something - and repairing the damage has been estimated at £450 by Precision Porsche.

I did call them, the guy said "you've left the car park, that's it" then put the phone down, at which point I was furious.

Since then I've entered into an email conversation with them which hopefully will go a little better!

Hopefully they'll make this right - anyone else had this experience?

The bumper is creased, looks like Heathrow Meet and Greet reversed the car into something ~2 feet high and ~1 foot wide, offset toward the passenger side from the centreline of the car.

It needs a new bumper, plus paint - which is going to be around £1,800 I think.

Heathrow are "investigating", luckily I gave a colleague a lift home who can corroborate that we didn't reverse into anything or get rear ended on the journey, but I have a bad feeling about this (largely based on Heathrow Meet and Greet putting the phone down on me when I called them to discuss this).
