Tyre Wear and Alternatives
Discussion
Morning.
I have a Ducati Monster, 1200. The rear tyre is wearing fast (2500 miles and it won't last much longer tread depth wise) but I've also got wear around the centre 1/3 where the edges of the tread appear to have degraded badly - it's as if someone has gone round the tyre picking the rubber off each side.
It's not the wear you see on the edge of the tyre on a track day, but like the tread edges have been pinched off, like an eraser on the end of a pencil that's been pulled apart (sorry for the terrible examples).
Pressures are correct and it's a Pirelli Diablo Rossi II.
It's this caused by heat or a tyre that isn't up to a lot of torque (doubt it, sure they fit them to more powerful bikes).
Finally, front tyre is fine, suggestions for different tyres and - stupid question - would you suggest matching front and back?

I've had two sets of Rosso IIs one wore through to the canvas in about 3,000 miles, I got less than 2,000 miles out of an almost new set when I got the bike. I'm not a fast rider either.
It sounds like you have other issues however.
My front Rosso II was triangular and bald on the edges in 4k. I wasn't fast and with nothing changed - same settings and roads ridden I'm on about 5k with even wear and some left on a front M7RR.It sounds like you have other issues however.
I'm running 34psi from memory.
I haven't altered the rear suspension, so may well be an issue. Certainly haven't seen tyre wear like this before on previous tyres.
Will get a picture tonight just to confirm.
I've read online that the Rosso II wears quick, but I was a little surprised, as the bike was new when I got it so those miles include running in.

As others have said Rosso 2s don't last long. I have them on the 916 and did have on the Monster but the Monster chews the rear up in 2,000 miles although they last much better on the 916, presumably because of the more progressive power delivery?
I have fitted an Angel GT on the Monster for now which, although a sports touring tyre seems to have plenty of grip and is lasting better than the Diablo.

Mild hijack; how you finding the M7RRs?I'm running Power Pilot 2CTs at the moment, which are due for a change in another 1000 miles. I've never really got on with them, but I'm not sure if that is my lack of experience or the tyres themselves. I just find they don't inspire massive amounts of confidence unless really hot.
I'm looking at the M7RRs next as they've had some great reviews and seem to be a pretty good balance between lifecycle and wet/dry grip (I'm not a fast rider).

I really like the M7RR. They have a great feel and a nice rate of turn, fast but nice and stable, not at all pointy. I bought a bike with worn 2CTs and didn't like them either. They always felt hard and didn't give the impressing of keying into the road.I'm running Power Pilot 2CTs at the moment, which are due for a change in another 1000 miles. I doubt you would be disappointed with the M7RR. I'm expecting to see 6K and a bit from the front and likely about 5K from the rear.

Cheers tricky, your take on the 2CTs is exactly where I am at the moment. Without any experience on other tyres, it's difficult to judge but I don't feel like they are planted in the corners and seem to take an age to warm up.I doubt you would be disappointed with the M7RR. I'll definitely give the M7RRs a shot then. Cheers

My R1 ate through the Rossos in <2,000 miles IIRC.
Why not give the Michelin PR4 a try? It's been very good this year on my R1, particularly in the cold and when there's been an un-forecasted deluge and it's wearing quite well too.
Can you post pics of your damaged Pirelli?
I'm using Michelin PR4s at the moment, they have a much more 'rounded' profile than the previous PR2s. I could get within a couple of mm of the edge of the PR2s but despite leaning over even further on the PR4s the chicken strips are still a good 1/2"Why not give the Michelin PR4 a try? There's also a definite 'step' between the two compounds where the softer rubber has worn much quicker.

My current Rosso III has done various 1000 mile per month riding, a 2000 mile Euro tour and two trackdays and still has some life in it. I don't hang about as a rule.
In comparison the II it replaced did about 2500 miles (2.5 months). The III is better in all conditions, sticks like the proverbial to a shovel and is fantastic in the wet. You know what to do.
That's a Brutale 800RR.
It's worth noting something like a PR4 has such a slow rate of turn on a bike like this that it'll last forever but spoil the ride.

I will get pictures up - haven't had the chance yet. At least it now seems that I'm not the only one suffering from fast wear which is good to know. Hopefully the wear will indicate if my suspension is indeed a little off.
Sounds like the III is worth a go - I've had PR3 before on another bike and did like them, but I have loved the II's grip (in the dry), Just not interested in using up 2 tyres a summer.
I've not struggled with Rosso 2s in the bucketing rain, fastest wet run of my life was on fresh Rosso 2s in the highlands a few years back. Similarly I've never experienced any noticeable difference in turn in either PR3s or PR4s, in fact I have them for the budget track bike I'm starting work on.
I'm quite happy to discuss that we may not like them because of our personal use, but I'm not convinced any of us have exceeded the potential of these premium tyres, wet or not.
