Haven't even picked it up yet LOL, but the engine is such a peach and sounds great - if a snidge quiet.

I note its fruitier in the 'sport' mode but tends to hang on to (auto) gears a bit longer then which can be unwanted. Can anyone please let me know what it does to the sound in 'sport' mode - I don't believe it actually has exhaust system valves like my other car (which are probably seized open due to inactivity)! Pls tell me the sound isnt piped in on the speakers?!

Whatever, its a superb engine so the missus wants to hear more of it as its such an enjoyable part of the car. Bless her smile

My understanding (and I have one, albeit a convertible) is that it's 'enhanced' and played through the speakers. Active Sound I think it's called.... Does sound good, but its best not to think about the technology used ☺️

Getting the same Sunday smile You enjoying the car?

Seems like I've crossed an ethical line if it is indeed piped in - mind you its the missus' car (but she really likes an inspiring exhaust tune). smile

Grab an M performance exhaust if you want a bit more noise.

If you order through Babybmw they are surprisingly reasonable.

The standard exhaust is fairly fruity and sounds good on startup from behind the car - the main problem is the car is too well insulated so you can't hear it from inside.

There is an exhaust valve that controls whether one or both pipes work - there's some debate whether this is a sound thing, or just for emissions to heat things up quicker.

Sport mode mainly adds more digital noise - it is a fairly nice 6-pot sound, but you can make out a slightly digital video game sound to it if you really listen. It hasn't annoyed me as much as I thought it might.

I think sport mode must also do something to the engine map, as you definitely get more pronounced upshift farts and overrun burbles. The upshift farts are pretty subtle though, not annoying and completely overdone like on a lot of other cars these days.

As you say though sport mode can't really be used for cruising or mixed driving as it will never go into top gear. Full manual mode is rubbish in any kind of traffic as it is pretty jerky from first to second, and you'd spend all day doing 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 on the paddles. It's spot on for b-road blasts though when you are only using 2 or 3 gears most of the time.

Look for the exhaust golf T mod which keeps the flap in the RHS exhaist open permanently. Makes it sound much louder all the time instead of just at WOT or in sport mode.

Yes, M-Performance accessories are BMW parts so no warranty issues.

Yes, the car has been great over the summer smile
Wouldn't recommend it if you do too many long motorway journeys mind, and especially not in 'sport'. It's really quite unrefined! But on quiet A / B roads...biggrin

She's home! What a little cracker - if not the 50mph roads that seem to plague Dorset! NSL does not apply.

Handover salesman was a proper car guy unlike many knowledge lacking shiny showroom slickers. Confirmed there is an exhaust valve and he said that there are no speaker shenannigans, but that even the Golf Tee mod still isnt enough for the afflicted. He said that a £500 M Sport back box aftermarket option releases the music... This was petrolhead talking not sales...I think wink

Anyone done?
