So selling some bikes and thinking about what to get next. Unfortunatley my work doesn't have any secure parking, which means I can't buy the bike I want, which is the KTM SMT.

I looked at an old Tuono but again the parking situation is going to be a real worry and that will mean it will get nicked.

So I am going for a 2k ish SV1000. It seems to have similar bhp and torque figures and even similar weight. Also I don't think the SV1000 is that desirable that someone will nick it. I recognise an SV1000 isn't a SMT but the stats seem similar.

This is going to be my October to May bike to commute into London the days I can't face the train or I'm too knackered from the pushbike.

I hope its the wheelie machine its reputed to be as that always livens up an empty carriageway.

Has anyone ridden this bike? Is the naked version a better bet than the faired model? Anything to look out for?

I'd be looking at the naked version. There looks to be a tidy silver one on eBay just now for £2500.

Not sure what the SV1000 is like in traffic, but I wouldn't want a big 1000cc v-twin to commute through London, they're generally not great at slow speed stuff/filtering and get hot quickly.

I've commuted once on my Gen2 Tuono (some filtering either end and a lot of being stuck behind 40mph traffic) and it felt like a caged lion, I wouldn't to use it every day for that.

If you want a winter commuter there's a lot of bikes much more suited to the task.

I have had dozens of bikes but currently run a SV1000S and its a great road bike, the engine whilst being a twin is not lumpy in traffic and will pull happily from 2k rpm, I really rate it, its better than the GSXR750/929 Blade/955i Daytona/Fazer 1000 I have had in recent years, it is plenty fast enough (on the road), sounds awesome (with some easy intake and exhaust mods) and is all day comfy.

I think they are very underrated, plus they are a good looking, good handling bike, they are a doddle to wheelie, and do 50mpg, there's no real issues to look for, just the usual neglect, the engines are a derivative of the old TL1000 engine and is also used in the DL1000 adventure thing so pretty bulletproof, the pegs on the naked version are an inch lower but I only get twinges after a couple of hundred miles, I wouldn't want a naked one personally.

Recommended by me, I'm thinking of keeping it, which for those who know me on here is quite unusual.

Gratuitous pic of mine

Wow! She's a keeper !?!?!
If Dave ( Jazoli) is keeping ( for as long as that theory may , or may not, last)
- it is indeed a worthy recommendation , many of us who know Dave know of his experience and ability on a bike and he can lead/ follow / wheelie at length on that SV1000 at any pace anywhere at will, pretty much as he does on any bike in fairness , but if he likes it that much then I reckon you can't really go wrong - proper value for money and not too much dough to chance a go , can't really lose a lot if bought right ( becoming that "right time" nowish) with winter beckoning.
Good luck and enjoy - ps they do sound awesome from any angle - you will not risk not being heard when commuting, without being childish/stupid boy racer loud ( fit cans to suit ).

Wow just the kind of response I was hoping for. Seems like an underrated bike.

I was also considering a ZX9r or old blade or 955i as these are all around the same price.

I was a little concerned about the engine being lumpy in traffic as I had run Ducati's previously. Air-cooled ones at that. However I have read that the V-Twin is super super smooth for a twin.

Hopfully i'll bag a semi decent one. Might even use it as a 'wet' bike at trackdays on those crappy days where the rain has come and risking the main bike isn't worth it.

By the way... Jazoli

Are there any sprocket changes worth doing to make it smoother in traffic or help those wheelies along?

I really need to work on my wheelies. Want to learn to change gear.

To add some hopeful help here.. I had a Aprilia SL1000 falco.. V60deg twin.. and not naturally as balanced like a 90deg twin, it needed a front sprocket drop to make it usable at low revs in 2nd around London. I owned a sv650s before that and being a 90 deg twin it was perfectly fine at low revs. I'd expect the SV1000 to be better than my old falco with the mille twin aprilia engine. smile

And thats about where it ends!I had an SMT for nearly 40000 miles and a naked SV as a runaround whilst deciding what to buy next. Never gelled with the SV, and the SMT engine, imho, is leagues ahead of the SV. I found once you started using the revs of the SV it sounded very strained and got very vibey, whereas the SMT would fly around to the redline and you'd hardly notice at all.But then it is a few years fresher design wise. I've got a 30 inch inside leg and found the SV cramped, so if you have long'ish legs I'd try and have a good test ride.Personally, I couldn't wait to get rid of the SV and back now on a SM950 which again I'd rate as a far better bike.

SV should be fine for commuting as I found the bars very narrow and it should give you plenty of torque from the lights etc.

Cheers for that... I really really want a SMT! However it wont last where I have to leave it in the city.

So I'll bumble through with an SV for now and see how I get on. Maybe a 990 Adventure might be the ticket and thwart the thieves.

Yes possibly, for now anyway, going to fit a QS and spend a few quid on the suspenders and see how it goes.

I run -1/+3 F/R it perks it up a bit and makes second gear great for wheelies! You'll probably need to fit a TRE but there's a cheap and easy mod for a couple of quid that will do the same job.

Loud cans are a must, as is fitting a K&N and removing the airbox snorkel for maximum intake noises, mine sounds amazing (in my opinion, not sure if the neighbours would agree)

The only other mod I have done is to fit a radial master cylinder off a late gsxr thou.

As a road bike they are great, it's even ok on track as I found out today.

Cheers for that.

I have no idea what a TRE is? Please enlighten me.

I am dropping my budget to include servicing so its between the SV and the 955i. The Triumph seems terrific value at the moment, with late 2006 bikes even falling into budget. However I have already been there with a 955i so leaning more toward the SV.

The good news is that most of the SV's I have seen have had many of the upgrades already done apart from the sprockets.

Timing retard eliminator.

Lots of bike manufacturers (seems more common to the Japs) limit power in the first few gears by retarding the ignition. The TRE tricks the ecu into thinking its in 5th or 6th gear where no retard applies.Normally its just a small box you plug into the gear position sensor wiring or similar.
