Anyone else just crap at chip repair?

Just washed the car and found quite a large chip on the bonnet, right to bare metal.
Got out the touch up kit which has the clear coat and colour and applicators.
Whenever i attempt it it goes like this:

1. Clean with alcohol wipes
2. Apply small blob of base coat
3. Wait to dry
4. Apply again, repeat until as level as possible
5. Apply two coats of clearcoat
6. Use a mild polish and gently wipe to try and get it level
7. End up wiping the whole lot off, start again, apply one big blob and leave it feeling defeated.

I dont even care how it looks i just dont want it to rust.

Too much paint there; what did you apply it with ? My kit came with separate applicators which look like plastic cocktail sticks with pointed fibre tips. Got good results.

Yes, too much paint. You should leave it shy with the colour coat and then build up the thickness with a clear lacquer. When that is level or *slightly* proud you can cut it back.

This process takes a long time. These days I just scrape it off, prime and blob on colour coat, then ignore it. But my car's a shed.

After applying your 2 coats of clear coat,Wait 24 hours then gently use some 2000 wet paper, nice and gentle untill level with the original paint.
Then a case of using a mild compound to buff up the area you wet flatted then your wax..you can do it with brilliant results

I just clean the chip and blob on colour coat.

Leave it for a while (the timing is tricky - I don't do enough to work this out but it can still be soft after days) and then rub off the surplus using Electrolube's UltraSolve.

I wrap thin cotton around a flat plastic card, spray that with Ultrasolve and then rub flat across the surface to flatten the blob. Did a few on the bonnet of a lightish metallic blue Jazz Mrs S used to have and you couldn't see where the chips had been, although to be fair I haven't managed to repeat the same level of invisibility on other cars.

Best thing I have found to use is a large paperclip to touch in.

unwind the paperclip so you have a few cm's long, and use the end to touch in with. Its very small and is very hard to put too much paint on the chip.

The other I have seen used is a cocktail stick, but never tried it myself..
