My LCI E91 325d has been pretty faultless but i quite fancy something more interesting. Definitely not diesel. An M135i, or maybe a renaultsport.

Last week a friend of a friend put me in touch with someone selling a good spec M135i going for a bargain price. I put the 325d up for sale, but the M135 turned out to be not quite as mint as i'd hoped, so i went away to think about it.

The M135 has now been sold to a trader. I left the advert for the 325d on to see what happens, and in typical fashion i've now had someone on the phone willing to pay the asking price for it, only now i'm not sure i want to move on. The "pull" of that M135i is no longer there and others for sale are out of reach financially.

Take the money and go shopping? No idea what i'd buy though! Or stick with it?

Thoughts/musings welcome!

E90 335i?

130i would be good though - 270bhp straight six is lovely in that car.

As a side note OP, I just got a E90 325d auto and love it! Nippy enough, frugal enough, comfortable enough. Spot on for commuting. I think itll be hard to move on for me.

Yeah they are good. Getting about 45 mpg out of mine and it does shift when i need it to. Nice smooth motor and a very pleasant place to be!

I have an itch for something more interesting/fun though, but the only thing that really gets me excited is an M135/M140. Huge chunk of cash more than the 325 is worth though.

Could get a shed for a year or two while i save up, or simply keep the 325. It's not going to drop in value too quickly now.

hmmmm...

I'd look for one of the 40i options. 1, 2, 3, 4 depending on budget, needs.

If you go 35i you will simply be having a N55 engine which you could get in a E9x 335i and the E9x cars have in my opinion more steering feel / driver feedback than the newer cars.

If you can google the "smoking tire, one take review of 340i" you will get an excellent review of the new B58 engine in the 40i derivatives. What sounded most exciting was how this pulls to redline unlike N55. In the 3 series at least this came at LCI stage and I have read there were other changes that made the steering heavier with more feel.

So either play safe and as others have suggested go E9x 335i or skip forward to make sure you get the latest versions of the following generation.

Obviously, M3s are the most exciting option, but fuel and running costs may be prohibitive. If you watch the review I suggest they analyse the 340i against the M3.
