Poss. track car

So, after reading more and more about speeding and becoming more risk averse on the public highways (as it should be in fairness) I am debating on getting a track car.

I have never done a track day before and am so tempted to throw down some cash and buy a Zenos, KTM or Ariel but head is ruling on this one, and figured I would go with something small and cheap that doesnt matter if I total it on the first outing!

With that in mind I am thinking of the cheapest route possible ... and I have been offered a Saxo VTR for peanuts (just over a ton), its in decent nick and even has some MOT left on it ... with a view to stripping and track prepping over the winter ready for next year - I dont know about the driving of said car to the track or trailering etc... I do have a council garage for storage etc... so do have a place off the road for it!

Thoughts appreciated from those way more experienced in such things!

if you've never done a td before then just buy the saxo and enjoy. cheap enough to change/upgrade when you're more knowledgeable.

I agree with this, just get something cheap to get you started. If you've never been on track before, it'll blow your mind how much harder you can push a car! I started with a Clio 182 Trophy for track and I'm now on a 172 Cup, both brilliant starter cars for track work and the latter cheap enough to buy and not worry about too much.

Buy something and then bring it to our Sunday Service at Silverstone on the 23rd of October and take it out on a taster session to get you started. If you haven't bought anything by then, come along anyway and one of us can take you out for a ride in something!

Excellent advice, thankyou both for affirming my thoughts

I'll see what I can sort in the next couple of weeks and go from there.

Definitely will be good! Depending on the value of your car and if you want to protect it, there's a number of specialist insurers that'll either include track day cover or have it as a bolt on.

My cars are insured with Greenlight, and they have a track day bolt on which I think is £60 per day I take the car out.

Well it's bought ... ended up being £190 and looks a decent base to start from.

Not sure if it'll be ready for the end of Oct for tracking mind but I'll see!

Thanks for the tip on insurance, it's something I need to sort and understand as it's more damage to others and the track than my car I'm worried about at the minute!

Sounds like an absolute bargain, congrats! My understanding of track insurance, and as bad as this sounds, is that even if you hit someone else you're not liable to fix their car. Therefore I don't know if track insurance would even cover someone else's car in the event of an accident.

This is actually the main reason why I take out cover myself, as I'm more worried about someone crashing into me than actually crashing myself. Now I've said that, I'll probably stuff it into a barrier somewhere...
