Hi

I am thinking of getting a Kodi box and have a few questions.

:Do I need to have it plugged into my router or will it work ok through WiFi.

:Can they be used safely by children i.e. if you search for something unrelated porn isn't going to pop up.

:Regarding boxes I have seen this on amazon.

AKASO Q-BOX Smart TV Box Kodi 16.0 Loaded Android 5.1 Lollipop Bluetooth Amlogic S905 Quad Core 64-bit CPU Mali-450 GPU 2GB RAM 16GB Nand Flash 4K/2K Output H.265 HD Video Decoder 1000M LAN Video Playback Streaming Media Player with Remote Control

Any good ?

Either, should be fine on wireless though. I don't have any trouble streaming high res stuff from PC to my NowTV box (Plex client installed, Plex is another media server), though my router is 300/433mbit.

You probably want to set up some parental controls, there are some things in the settings if I recall correctly, but you may need addons for actual Parental Control. The box bought like this will probably be preloaded with lots of addons, I don't think any of the popular things will have any porn, there will be addons that could be installed that do however.

It's worth understanding though that installing addons isn't neccesarily simple, most of the interesting ones are not in the official repositories, you need to add repositories manually and install from there. Unless you have one of the wizards to install them for you, which makes things easier with addons getting taken down periodically and having to be re-installed in a new way, though the wizards I know of are also installed from a manually added repos. The box may be preloaded with repositories that could have all sorts in them.

Can't really help on the box as I only have Kodi on my PC for sports, I'd think that could handle 1080p for example fine looking at those specs.

Hi mizx

Thanks for your reply.

I have installed Kodi on my lap top to get a feel for it I have installed Exudus if that is what you mean by add-ons.

Also the box I noted in my OP doesn't have a keyboard is this a problem for searching.

There are official kodi remote apps for iOS and Android (Kore) and Yatse for Android which is loads better.

Just a heads up, these somewhat hooky "loaded" kodi addons will almost certainly stop working at some point, some may already be blocked by your ISP! (esp if its Sky/BT)

I'm with Sky fibre. Nothing that I use has experienced any problems.

OP...once you've got the basic kodi program installed, put wookie wizard on it. There's plenty of guides around if you have a google. It has everything you could possibly need in one build and works very well.

If you want to buy a fully loaded Kodi box, I would buy sooner rather later as the looming court case may stop the sale of the fully loaded boxes.

There's absolutely no need to buy anything "fully loaded". There's so many guides out there for installing anything you want. Just buy a device and do it yourself. Literally anyone can do it if they can read.

OP - I have a Minix 8H and it works very well.

You can manage without a keyboard, but get one with the "air mouse" type remote - it doesn't need to be line of sight to operate the unit.

Yeh don't buy a fully loaded one, just buy a clean one.

I bought a "Android box" after a few months decided it was rubbish despite really good reviews so sent it back, Have since bought an Amazon Fire TV Box and run Kodi on it now.

its a lot better.

Re stuff for kids. Kodi has a 'master lock' facility, which requires a password before you can alter any settings, essential for little geniuses who like to fiddle.
The popular 'Wookie' build has a 'just for kids' version, but before you install Wookie be aware there's a ststorm brewing between various factions behind Wookie, things stopped working last week because of it, and a new server was required to sort it.
The popular 'Addon Installer' has 'adult' addons available with just a couple of clicks, and Wookie has an adult build too, so unsupervised kids can install these very easily. The master lock will prevent this.

Ref parental controls, there's an add on called PinSentry that works quite nicely. You can manually set it up or get it to pin code content based on certifications of movies etc. You can also disable pin entry at certain times. So if your kids are firmly in bed from 1930 to 0530, you can leave it off to avoid having to enter a PIN all the time.

I'll be implementing this anon once I've given the Mrs some lessons on how it works (so the kids will probably be 18 before it actually gets used!).

Hi

I have my box up and working but am having problems sorting a build for it. When adding a source file I keep getting the message"Couldn't retrieve directory information. This could be due to the network not being connected. Would you like to add it anyway?" I have tried Mikes ultimate Kodi build and Dad Life family build but get the same message each time. I have installed Exedus no problem and have been watching movies so the box and internet connection are working fine. Could anyone help me with this thanks.

This error means you've not typed the address of the new source correctly. You need the " http:// " check for commas instead of full stops, check the spelling, especially upper and lower case characters, and if it's wookie you're adding, their server address changed very recently, make sure you've got the latest one.

If you're still struggling to get a build on, you could try installing something called Ares Wizard, you can install builds easily from this with one click. There's also plenty of different ones to to choose from. Worth joining their FB page for instructions etc (look for Ares project)

Type the address of the source file into a web browser, should link to the directory if the address is correct.

I don't use it myself but Pulse CCM build is meant to be popular if a build is the route you want to go down.
