Motorbike stolen Thursday evening. What do the police do?
Discussion
Frankly, based on personal experience and not on simply wishing to bib-bash, this is how it'll go:
They'll give you a crime ref number for your insurance company (and if you're luckier than me, they'll give you the right one, not one relating to someone else's car theft which then causes the insurance company to unnecessarily ask even more questions) - and that's it. You'll never hear from them again, not unless a MoP finds your bike and parks it in their lobby and they want shot of it.
There was cctv covering where mine was taken from, I asked them to view, they didn't.

Depends on the force and the circumstances.
Which force area/county do you live in?
Where was it stolen from?
Any CCTV (yours or neighbours)?
Have you already asked your neighbours if they saw anything?
As has been said, in reality it's unlikely they'll send someone out unless there's an active line of enquiry (witness, forensics etc)

Charge you if they find it cos it will get recovered!
Yep, I got a crime number and asked if I'd like to pay £150 (2005 vintage price) up front to get it recovered back to me 'if' they found it. I declined because there was zero chance, after hassle and accusation repeatedly in the early stages the insurance company ultimately paid out. Not a nice experience and the police basically provided me the ability to claim on my insurance that's it

Sadly not a lot, when my GSXR was stolen in February, despite loads of pictures of the thieves etc I received an email within 48 hours from the Met saying the case was closed due to lack of evidence!
This week I was more lucky and a sports club manager spotted my bike parked up in the corner of his car park the morning after it was stolen, phone d the Police who checked the reg, called me and I was able to have it collected by SOS breakdown.
The crime reference number etc just helps out a little with the insurance. Doesn't help to stop them fking you over for the payout price though!

Just keep repeating the Home Office mantra 'crime is falling, front line numbers are being maintained' and it'll all be OK.
When the forces are being decimated, this is the outcome.
I don't believe that? When the forces are being decimated, this is the outcome.
The police service has been reduced by 90%. Is that what you are saying?
No, surely some mistake?

And, stop calling me Shirley.
To the OP - your bike was probably stripped down to parts by the next day and is more than likely on it's way to Eastern Europe already as spares.
In respect of the Police - their investigation was over the moment you told them you didn't have a CCTV pointing at your bike 24/7! Needless to say even if you did have 4k crystal clear CCTV capturing every detail of the offender they'd ask you to view it yourself and if you didn't know who it was they'd write off anyway. Total nonsense.

This. One of the MOC's Monster's was stolen a few weeks back. Police collected the reg.
A fellow OC member posted on his local neighbourhood watch group and 3 days later someone reported the bike to the police and to the board. Police informed owner that 3 days is prime time for thieves to return, as they leave it to see whether the bike is tracked.
What do they do? Do they wait for the scumbags to return and arrest them? Do the commend they ingenuity of the neighbourhood watch? No they "don't have time to wait for the thieves", they recover the bike and charge the owner £160 for the privilege.

The headlines.. "Search for kettle goes off the boil"
Laughed my way into a couching fit, thanks for that.Really feels like something needs to be done about bike theft, or vehicle theft in general. We shouldn't have to live in fear of bike/car theft in this country. Was a real eye opener visiting Stuttgart, the city looks quite poor but there are highly nickable 80s/90s classic sports bike parked up over night on poorly lit side streets, not even a disc lock.
