Just registered with PH as thought it a good site to get some feedback.

Looking to change Mrs M's car in the near future and having trouble deciding on what to go for.
Have decided to go down the petrol route after a long stint with diesels as well as something quick with a nice burble from the tail pipes.
History of her cars from last few years, 330d, 335d, 2 x RR Vogue TDV8s and currently a RR Evoque - Really unimpressed with the Ewok, bad choice but had our reasons for getting it.

Recently test drove a 62reg RS3 and a 60reg TT RS, both a lot of fun, very quick, great parp from the exhaust and put a smile on your face the minute you get going. Gearbox impressive and seemed to give a little blip of throttle on down shift. Very impressed.
Trouble is, the new RS3 launched last year and this is a much better car but you're looking at a shade under 40k for this! However, it will always be the one I'm after. It was the burble of a 2016 car I walked past that started this whole Evoque replacement in the first place. Only bought the damn thing 3 months ago!!!!

Googling info about the RS3 came across Chris Harris on YT comparing RS3 against M135i. It's nearly like a BMW advert, he seriously dislikes the Audi.

One thing about the BMW is that it is seriously good value. Budget is about £25k which will get you a very young M135i or at best a 2012 RS3.

Just wondered what others views were? Mrs M likes the Porsche Cayman as well so this could also be a contender although probably looking at a 2009 Reg for the budget. I've also got a wild card, well wild-ish. Over budget but an Audi RSQ3 ?? Can't work out why they only have 1 tailpipe though?

So, to summarise,
What do we go for? Thoughts, views and owner experiences appreciated........

Audi RS3
BMW 135i
Porsche Cayman 3.4
Audi RSQ3

Other suggestions welcome

At the risk of getting a bucketful of vehement communications from other PHers - where in 2016 can you get the benefit/thrill of driving anymore?. Put aside for one moment the selfish waste of the planets resources.
The price and therefore cost of any motoring in the future is only going one way. The roads of the UK are going to get more and more clogged from here on in. Pray, what is the point of having any vehicle above, say 1800cc, as you are not going to get anywhere any quicker by having something with a huge cubic capacity and a bloody great turbo - I repeat, whats the point?????

The police are obtaining more and more means to catch and prosecute people for doing stupid things on the road. You are looking to buy something that does 0-60 in under 8 seconds, and 135mph. Unless you intend getting all your silly thrills at 2.00oclock in the morning, (still subject to the police tools above), why bother?.

Unless, of course, impressing the boring neighbours/your children/the boss/the milkman is so much more important than real life - just carry on Sir.

How dare you come on here spouting such rubbish! All those cars do 0-60 in under 5 seconds, and at least 155mph!!!

But seriously, odd post is odd. You don't have to have fun in a car going 140mph, there still are some nice NSL twisties out there where handing and having bags of torque from a decent engine is seriously fun. Maybe you have to venture out of town more. What about the sound a car makes or the acceleration all of which can be enjoyed while remaining on the right side of the law. What about track days? Many on here enjoy them, wouldn't quite be the same with 1800cc rep mobiles would it?

The environment argument always throws me a bit. I would bet on average most 'exotic' or larger engined cars are used as weekend or fun toys therefore are doing far, far less miles than the above mentioned 1800cc cars you'd have us all driving....

But as the old saying goes, each to their own.

B-roads - especially those within a national park. I'm sure there's several thousand miles to choose from.

Hmm, wasn't the type of petrol head reply I was expecting tbh?
We live in a rurali-ish area and there is some nice roads you can still have a blast on. Also looking for a car that can pull off a swift overtaking manoeuvre when needed reducing that 'time exposed to danger' figure. Something that makes you smile every time you fire it up.
Environment...........?! Well, in our business we're shifting nearly 100,000 tonnes of product a year by hgv. It's on that basis that whatever green tree hugging car I go for it will make naff all difference to the planet !

Anyhow, I'm still left with my dilemma. Just wanted opinions on what might be best to go for, and it won't be a Prius !!!

I had a Boxster 3.4 and also a Cayman 2.9. The Cayman is a very different car to the other listed, fantastic but in their own way. Out of the list you've posted I'd go for the RS3 just because I'd need the extra room and it's got a great engine.

I'd say the RS3 just for that engine, the Cayman is a good shout or take an Evora out for a test drive you'll be impressed but they are slightly over budget.

Just watched an Evora on YouTube. That's a serious exhaust note, love it.

I have owned both the RS3 and currently a M135i.

I had the RS3 for two months, it was the single worst thing I have ever driven. Would not go around a corner at all. Dismal and depressing.

Thanks Dufflecoat,

Worthwhile input there. Now considering a BMW M140i - Looks like the way to go........

Out of those I've driven the m135, rsq3 and TT rs.

The Audis are built well but they are dull, they are great in all weather conditions but they are not a patch on the m135i

Have you considered a 335i ?

I've had an m135i for 2.5yrs now. Absolutely love it. The deals on the 135i and 140i are brilliant. Much better value than the other cars on your list (haven't driven them so can't comment on anything else). Check out babybmw forum for best offers. I would think 25k (or very slightly over) would get a brand new car, at least it did 2yrs ago. I got 20% off list when I bought mine and kept the options light. If you keep them basic there's nothing comparable for the same money. Won't be long before you can no longer buy a 3L rwd hatch, soon they'll all be 4 cylinder and fwd (or front biased 4wd).
