The battery on my 05 987S failed recently. I have got it up and running again for now with the use of the trickle charger, but I think it is time to swap the battery out.

The problem is that each time I disconnect the battery (or let it run down), the heated seats stop working. This is a simple fix, requiring the car to go back to the dealer for the handover process to be done.

The current cost of this is £110, which isn't a massive amount of money, but it is annoying to keep having to pay it for what is effectively a design fault. I plan to keep the car indefinitely, so it is going to be even worse when it is only worth a couple of grand!

Does anyone know if the OPCs leave power running to the car somehow when they change the battery, or do they just run the handover anyway given it is free for them?

Presumably you just need to keep 12v supplied whilst you change the battery? A quick Google turns up loads of stuff, mainly suggesting the use of the "jumper" battery packs. This one uses a small battery (it's for saving a radio code), but you get the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HREVVZAqNI

I have no idea how an OPC would do it, but I'd go for something like that.

If the seats are disabled OPC will turn them back on with Porsche system tester. This takes very little time. You can also do this with Durametric diagnostic lead but you need the Pro version. There are also very cheap ripoff leads out there which might allow you to do it cheaply.

Thanks. I'll look into these.

It might only take a few minutes, but they still want over £100 to do it at the OPC. I could wait until the next service is due to see if they will throw it in, but I'd like to use the heated seats over the winter.

I have seen the copy cables on eBay for about £20. At that price, I'd pick one up just to try it out but it states they need an XP PC which I don't have.

Thanks, that is really useful to know. I will get one anyway as it will definitely be useful to have. Is there a particular one you'd recommend.

I have been trawling the Porsche sites and the general consensus is that even the Durametric Pro canot do the handover, it has to be PIWIS.

I'm not paying £110 and taking the time out to take it to the OPC, so I'll just go without heated seats until the next service!

I'd just keep it powered via jump leads.
