Just curious how much success anyone's had with negotiating down prices on second hand Caymans from non OPC dealers.

As mentioned elsewhere, I have a deposit on a 718s, but drove a 981s again today and loved it, so am keen to pursue that route.
The two variables I have to negotiate on are the price and finance package (APR)

The car i'm interested in is listed at just under £45k.. Am I being overly optimistic trying to get this down to ~£42,750- that's about 5% off.
Is there that much margin in a second hand car?

Used prices will remain relatively strong in the short term for the reason that you want one.

For a dealer there can be more margin in a "nearly new" than there is in a brand new car.

When you're buying a car the seller's margin isn't really relevant. It all comes down to how much you want the car and whether you can find a cheaper one elsewhere.

Agree - and if you can find one with a "better" spec than the one you are hoping to buy (even if it's not quite to your taste - but you don't need to reveal that ) - you have a negotiating position with the salesman. Personally have found (in general - not particularly Porsche dealers ) the "I'll sign NOW if you give me this with that or the other" is a good ploy.

Dealers set themselves a margin to make on a used car sale. Depending on the relationship between the figure that makes the margin and the advertised price there may be a bit of room for negotiation. How much they'll shift depends on how keen they are to sell it soon (is it new to them or been hanging around?) and how much they sense you're keen to buy...

But there's often more to buying a car than handing over the money - finance, gap rip-off insurance, paint and wheel protection, etc. Often there's a big commission/margin on those, so maybe there's extra scope for manoeuvre.

I recently bought from an OPC and ended up p/exing my previous car - after having several useful conversations with other dealers. The OPC threw in only a set of coloured centre caps but I was happy because I got a good price on the trade in and the new car was competitively priced. At the end of the day it was the best deal.

Thanks all - lots of good tips in there. it's a high specced 3 yr old car (circa £60k new)- I think it's priced at the top of end for what it is without a Porsche warranty, but it's in stunning condition and low miles.

Guess the only way to find out is to put in my best offer and see how close I can get to that.

If you go in prepared to walk away, you'll get the best price the dealer can live with. Top end without OPC warranty maybe, but you're buying a relatively "mature" model, so probably carrying little risk. I think you'll get it for what you're offering, and you might just move me a single place up the 718 wait list... wink

Hixter,
There is no doubt that the better way to go is through a main dealer, just to get the 2 year warrenty.
But in this case if none are available that you want you have to consider the true condition of the car, so what are your options.
Presumably the previous owner had it from new?
I only say that as I assume the owner from new took the option 3rd year warrenty which could be good news.
I know its easy to say it, but you should not be overly concernened if thats the case.
Your other option is to book the car in and get a full report from the main dealer, they will do that, for a cost of course. This would give you complete confidence that the car is fine.
You could then buy a warrenty if you want one, or not bother.

The only thing people can't do for you on here is tell you wether to buy it or not.

If the mileage is very low, I would seriously consider it?

Just make sure you are 100% happy you have done all the right checks.

Good luck, ............... Long live the 6pot.

Gadgit.

Cheers Gadgit,

Thanks for the tips, totally take on board the dealer angle.. If I do buy privately / non-Porsche the car will definitely go in for a check - I may even extend the warranty.

I've trawled OPC used and can't find anything quite the same - the spec ticks all my boxes except sports exhaust - but with the 6 sounds, I don't mind too much.

Car is 1 owner from new bought at my local OPC, i've seen all the paperwork. less than 14k miles, serviced over a year ago and only done 3k since then. Mint.

Spec is:

Basalt black with black sports seats plus
Sports chrono package
PASM
Nav
20' carrera classic alloys
Twin zone automatic air condition
Heated front seats
Phone prep
Sports steering wheel
Power steering plus
Bi-xenon lighting system
Park assist front and rear
Electric folding exterior door mirrors
Automatically dimming interior mirror
Sports seats plus two way memory
Tyre pressure monitoring system
Porsche communication management
Bose surround sound system

Close to a deal with these guys, need to talk to OPC about deposit on 718 now... then have a chat with LiamH66

Deal done - I am the proud owner of my first Cayman 981S :-)

It's going into OPC Guildlford for 111 point check next week and warranty extension prior to me getting my hands on it!

Porsche were happy to refund my 718 deposit, absolutely no quibbles.

I'd be tempted to keep that warranty money in your pocket. My car's just passed 4 years and despite all the wailing and anguish on PH doesn't seem to have exploded yet. And no, I didn't extend the basic warranty when it expired.

Anyway, you might want to check out the mainstream SOGA (so-called) statutory warranties which should give the buyer of an expensive used car at least some peace of mind against a major failure in the early months.
