Jaguar XF Sportbrake test pics

An XF wagon is on the way and it's looking good!

We're big fans of the Jaguar XF at PistonHeads, its combination of expertly honed dynamics, classy good looks and great refinement making it a fine executive saloon. For those after a more practical XF however - and who don't want an F-Pace - here's your first look at the estate.

Are you sure you want an SUV?
Are you sure you want an SUV?
In the Jaguar way it is likely to be called Sportbrake, replacing the original XF Sportbrake much sooner in the XF lifecycle than that car did. With a new E-Class Estate already available and a 5 Series Touring on the way, the Jag certainly won't want for rivals. That's in addition to the wealth of SUV alternatives too.

These first spy shots of an XF Sportbrake at the Nurburgring show it in 'S' spec, the same as tested by PH earlier this year as a diesel saloon. Note the 20-inch wheels, red calipers, disguised 'S' badge on the grille and twin exhausts. From what can be seen here the rear lights appear very similar to the saloon, as per the last Sportbrake.

Where there's less certainty at the moment is exactly what the estate bit of the Sportbrake will look like. Right now it has a rather hearse-like appearance, which is at odds with the rather swoopy silhouette of the old one. We'll assume that's a clever disguise to keep the final look hidden until the very last moment. Fingers crossed at least...

The XF Sportbrake is likely to make its debut at some point in 2017; expect it to be offered with the same engine and spec options as the saloon with a slight price premium. Then it has to be time for the XF SVR, doesn't it chaps?

This should keep the Jag faithful on here happy. I'm sure it'll be a very handsome beast.

Big old car... I wonder if they'll make me an XE Sportbrake?

I love my father's 3-litre XE but I need a boot.

I'd take this sort of estate over an SUV any day of the week.

Stupid name though.

HTH!

I wonder if the Sportbrake has big spoiler and a slightly Evoue-like treatment? The glass actually looks quite raked to me.

Rumours are no XE estate, only the XF shame.

Would love one of these to replace my 330D estate, just a shame jag only puts the 3litre engines in the highest spec so going to be thick end of £50k - least it will depreciate faster than the F-Pace so good used option.

Well considering the new XF is a brand new car (despite admittedly looking similar to the original) then I'd say no, it's not a facelift.

That first paragraph does sound like you're somewhat sucking up to JLR...

I wonder what is currently on the long-term fleet scratchchin

Excellent news - the supposed decision not to do an estate version because of the F-Pace never stacked up given what the competition are up to. Looks like there might be a new model around about the time I'm looking to replace my 2014 model.

I think they're just the standard Xenon XF lamps rather than the optional LEDs that most of the press cars seem to have.

Agree on your first point.

Disagree on the second; I quite like Jaguar's mangling of the term "shooting brake" which has connotations of posh estate car, and combining it with "sport" to fit the aspirational market, even if it is mainly bought by dog walkers.

The main criticism of the Mk 1 XF estate was that it was several years too late to market.

The same criticism was made of the X Type estate.

The lack of XE estate is mid-boggling, considering the lack of smaller Jaguar SUV to supplement its sales with.

This new XF estate is a welcome change from Jaguar's short-sightedness and slow-wittedness in bringing estate cars to market in Europe.

I'm guessing the problem of generating new models and variants for JLR is one of cost; their development budget will be a fraction of that of their big competitors. So whilst I agree with you - it would have made sense to bring the estate in earlier - at least they're sticking to doing things right.

Digga snr has an XF and it was in for a routing service at the dealers and they changed the full set of Pirellis, free of charge, for some new Goodyear rubber, because Jaguar were not happy about the tyre wear. Now whatever the actual story there (will we ever find out?) that sort of pre-emptive approach to issues speaks volumes to me.

I saw this on the M1 yesterday afternoon, it was going northbound somewhere after Milton Keynes, I was going southbound. It the metal it looks taller & squarer at the end than the old model (one of the best looking estates out there) but given the disguise wrap it'll probably be similarly pretty.

Looking forward to seeing this undisguised.

Suspect it will be the replacement for my current S in a couple of years
