Love my M4....hate my M4 for no roof rack mounts and a squeeze for the mtb, having got into cycling about three months after buying my M4, it's time to get sensible.

The only car I can think of to replace it is a 340i touring with the power and sound kit option. Reasoning being its one of the only performance estates that you can officially fit a tow bar too, and really want a tow bar cycle carrier for long journeys planned.

Has anyone gone this route, as would be interested to hear some thoughts.

a bike rack that fits to the rear tailgate/ boot lid?

'saris bones' usually come highly recommended on the cycling pages

No the reason for swapping would be to enable fitting of a tow bar rack.

That was quick. I went the 340i Touring route as like you
I ride quite a bit on the trails. I went the Thule roof system though rather than a
Tow bar. Enjoy!!

I have the BMW tow bar on my 335d. It works very well indeed carrying our 2 bikes and when not needed it disappears unseen under the rear of the car.

I'm changing my car in the spring and thinking another 335d or a 340i.

Can't you fit a tow bar to an M3?

Nope, sadly it's not type approved for towing. It's odd really, a number of cars you'd imagine would be the ultimate towcars are not type approved, Audi RS6 is another that springs to mind.

There is a towbar on the options list for the new Audi S4 so I'll be taking a look at that.

I thought about the S4 but with the power and sound kit and a decent set of winter tyres plus the generous discounts available the 340 won.

You're right, the S4 is new so unlikely to be discounted yet. I am testing one next month tho.

What is the power & sound kit please, are they on the options list?

Maybe a bit late to the party but have you thought about the Alpina D3? You won't get much knocked off one but they are seriously quick and very well sorted, I'm considering one to replace my RS4 next year, 40+mpg appeals but it lacks the aural drama I'm used to but maybe worth getting a drive in one, I was very surprised. Someone will no doubt be along to suggest chipping a 335d, but the torque is only part of the story, chassis, brakes and steering were very impressive.

That's because the S4 is a 340i equivalent. A genius in the Audi marketing department realised that everyone would think it was some sort of super special model if they called it S4 instead of 3.0TFSI S-Line, which is really what it is.

It worked, too. The number of times people seem convinced it's an M3 rival...

Interesting view, have you driven an S4? I'm down to try one next month.

Not the current model, no, but I drove the previous one before I bought a 335i M Sport.

It's a clear 335/340 rival - heck at one point they even had exactly the same list price!

Seems today the 340i is about £3k less than the S4. Meanwhile, the M3 is almost 50% more expensive...

I can't go for the M3 as I really do want the tow bar. The S4 I'm down to try is the new model so worth a look IMO.
