Hi
I just had my Canadian smog test done. In looking at 2 measures, they seem to be pointing to excessive rich mixture. At 2500 RPM the CO was measuring just under 2.0 when previous it was under 0.3. The other measure, I think hydrocarbon was showing 289 when I think normal is below 100. While it may still pass the test once I register my car as a grey market car, I assume this points to a tuning issue. Suggestions?

Hi unless the distributor has been moved, it's going to be something in the system. Be that fault or fault codes or something ignition related such as leads or the dreaded plug extenders. Do you have an Infra red thermometer? If you do, check all the exhaust outlets with it. If a couple are not firing properly, they will be cooler that the others and affecting the emissions.

It could be quite a few things and its worth temp as suggested above checking each manifold outlet to see if there's a misfire. If there is remove extender and repeat.

If no joy then switch over a spark plug to see if that improves it. If no joy switch an injector and check.

If the temps are similar then check lamnda sensors either by mutlimeter or the excellent rovergauge cable/diagnostic.

I had the same issues as you. The high CO was down to my lambda sensor. By the way over here the lamdba sensor is part of the check is it the same in Canada?

The high HC I've still got - 284. I've changed chips (had 2 after new cam and remap), spark plugs, leads, coil and distributor (all can contribute to your problem) and still no improvement.

Next up would be injectors and MAF (but rovergauge measures your lambda trimming and MAF output - all.good for me).

Bit of a goose chase I'm afraid so start with most logical & cheapest. But fix your HC and CO will go down unless lambda issue/Cat's are knacked.

Even at 284 I was getting 25 mpg.

The person doing the test could be a factor.
