bit of advice as to whether im being unreasonable, or if i should push this further

dropped my car off for its MOT this afternoon. failed on a couple of things, i'll fix them myself, not the issue

i paid for the MOT, got in my car and drove off. within 5 seconds of leaving i see a crack about 6 inches long on the bottom of the windscreen. the crack wasnt there when i dropped it off, and was not picked up on during the MOT. i turned around the talk to them about it, and was told it must have been a stone chip a while ago that just developed into a crack, not their fault. it happened whilst the car was in their care, and i was at home 2 miles away. he flat out refused to take any responsibility, no goodwill, just laughed and walked off (so either way, the owner is clearly a prick)

am i being unreasonable in wanting them to sort this for me?

I think with the stakes that low I'd just not use them again and pay my windscreen excess. Life is too short to go any further than you have with these cretins.

what exactly is your issue here?
do you disagree that it's possible that the crack could have appeared through no fault of thier own?
or do you feel regardless how it happen they should be responsible because it was on thier care.

Personally i find it fairly unlikely that a crack could just appear, but not impossible, so it's a bit of an awkward situation all round.

is the fact that it was not found during the MOT, yet found on collection, not enough proof that it happened whilst there?

my issue is that the car was in their care when the damage occured. it was not there before the MOT, but is after. its not cracked in the 2 years i owned the car, just the 2 hours they had it

So what? I didn't have any issues with windscreens in over 20 years of driving and then suddenly needed 3 replacement windscreens on the same car over 18 months due to huge cracks. One happened overnight when th car was in my own locked garage, one was a small stone chip near the edge which developed into a huge crack while the car was parked outside the window of my office during the day and the other was a stone from the tyre of a lorry in front of me on the way home. Note that two out of the three happened while the car was just sitting there on its own. Just because it happened while your car was parked up in their lot doesn't mean it's their fault. Besides, most garages and car parks have signs up with disclaimers about any damage which may occur while one's car is parked there.

Not everything in life is "someone's fault" you know.

Is it in the wiper swept area?

So how do you think they did it?

I don't think you have a leg to stand on really, they MAY have broken it, but you would have to be able to prove it, which you can't.

Why would they be messing near the windscreen anyway, unless they were fitting new wiper blades?

Get a new windscreen fitted and forget about it.

As others say, you have no chance. Pay the XS, get it sorted. You have an MoT now. We've all had screens go overnight. Put the garage on your sh*t list, by all means tell him he's a prick, by all means post negative feedback on the web.

What car is it? Did they do any other work or just the MOT?

Chips become cracks when the vehicle is lifted.

If they knew it happened in their care but wasn't their fault, why didn't the tell you about it before you drove off? Give them a bad google review to make yourself feel better and don't go back.

If you started driving off before you noticed it you're screwed. Put it down to experience and move on.

It was probably a small chip that developed into a crack at some point during the MOT whilst being lifted or dropped etc... so you cant really blame them for anything.

st happens i'm afraid, if it were me i'd just pay the excess for a new screen and continue with life

I afraid these things happen.

Years ago my Grandads windscreen cracked while it was parked in his garage, we heard it & nobody was in there with it.

£100 or so XS & move on.

As others say, post a bad review, tell him he's a cock & get your retest elsewhere.

He won't care, you are fixing your own failure points anyway.

Did they list the cracked windscreen as one of the things it failed on?

i thought i might just have to suck it up. i dont trust the garage at all, and the owners attitude was awful. i'll have to get some petty revenge through negative reviews online and suffer the £155 loss (to add on to the £800 or so i've already spent on the car this month...)

Have to take it on the chin I'm afraid...

I can see both sides of the argument tbf.l

How would they crack the windscreen in a mot would be my first thought...
