Is there anywhere in the South London/Surrey/Kent area where helicopters take off fairly regularly, and can be seen relatively close up.

For a kid who is too young to take a trip on one but loves seeing them pass by.

Around me (Just West of London) I'd have said Heli Air @ Denham or Wycombe Air Park where they do training, amongst other things.

Less sure about South London though - looks like there's some stuff around Fairoaks Airport just north of Woking, but not sure how often there's activity there. Perhaps Redhill Aerodrome too?

Yup, everyday, multiple times.

Picks up his helicopter toy, holds it aloft, makes pretend noises and points to laptop demanding its turned on. Worried it's bad for his eyes.

Thanks fellas, Battersea or Redhill will be perfect. Quick search indicates the hotel next to battersea one has balconies overlooking so may get afternoon tea for his mum too, kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak!

The Silverstone British Grand Prix always used to host the busiest heliport in the world (until all but the VIPs got moved to Turweston).

In 1999 there were 4200 take offs and landings on one day!

The Banyan? Those balconies (facing the river) are for 2 floor suites with a rack rate of £1200 per night and are as big as a three bedroom house. They actually have 3 beds, two bathrooms & downstairs loo, a massive lounge and a fully functional kitchen. I think they are mainly private flats. I got upgraded into one once from a room booked in the hotel via Late Rooms, paid £120 and couldn't believe my luck. I don't think they particularly have any public access area on the riverside, there may be a restaurant? Although you get a good view of helicopters flying down the Thames to land the view of the heliport is pretty poor from most of the hotel as I remember it.

It might be better to take him to Imperial Park across the river https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Thames+Path,+F... , certainly you will see more of take off and landings

Also, RAF Odiham (Chinooks & Lynx) publish their flight schedule here http://www.raf.mod.uk/RAFodiham/flyinginfo/flyings... though there isn't much detail which is understandable for the threats we face, but not so handy for a young lad.

If you can get to the noorth of Lobdon I'd recommend Elstree Aerodrome.
My parents used to take my kids when they were younger.
Lots of light aircraft and helicopters about 100m away.
There is a great cafe and viewing area at ground level.
Get a tea/coffee and a snack a sit down to watch. He will be mesmerised.

LOndon Hospital in the east end, they bring the air ambulance in the morning from, I think Booker? then put it to bed whence it came when its dark; during the day it gets used alot. A friend used to fly it until he got too old, if he was on the ground waiting in a park or somewhere he was very good at doing the PR thing with the punters

Why too young? It's not as if he'll be put in the right hand seat and asked to take it off. My daughter flew from 3 months old. Now just under 2 and goes mental when she arrives at an airport, 'cos she knows that at the end off the noisy bumpy thing ride, she'll be spoiled rotten and have fun! (Holidays)

+1

A friend of mine took his 2 year old grandson for his first ever flight in the back of a Cessna. On final approach the grandson was sick, 'oh dear, perhaps it was a mistake to take him so young', by the time they had taxied to a parking spot the kid had recovered and was demanding to know when they could go up again.

Hospital in the Eastend with a helicopter landing pad on the roof. Not far from Brick Lane.

Fairoaks as mentioned, search for a company Starspeed, you can view from next to their office/hanger, you probably can't get closer anywhere else, the view is the pic below.
