Hi Guys...hope everyone is having a good day

Looking at a used 2016 A6 Avant circa £30k from a main dealer, Jardine/Sytner/lookers etc

Having read a few threads on here about BMW/Audi/Merc used car prices it seemed as if some PH'ers were getting around £2k discount of a £30k motor.

Best I've had at the min is £600.....usually quite good at haggling on a deal....am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Jon

It depends on a number of factors :-

=> How long the dealer has had the car - if less than 3 months they're probably not interested in discounting heavily
=> How expensive their car is relative to other similar cars.
=> Dealers are tending to advertise at their lowest price for the car as they know people check for the lowest price cars.

Also, whats better - getting £2000 off a car at £32,000 or getting £600 off the same car at a different dealers listed at £30,000?

Yeah...the 3 cars are actually all around the same price and they don't seem to want to move much over a few hundred quid. I've heard plenty of people on here saying that they got £2k+ off main dealer used cars.

Pop back on Xmas Eve, if they've still got them make an offer, if not successful wait another 3 months rinse and repeat.

Firstly, have they really?

And secondly, as per above, it depends on how long the dealer has had the car and how much they want to move it on. If its been in stock a fortnight, they're probably happy to have it sitting there. If its been there 3+ months, they might be happy to discount it to make way for new stock.

Big discounts used to be common, but as i said above, dealers now have to price with the aim to be the cheapest online (or thereabouts) or the phone doesnt ring.

Also, bear in mind that dealers dont have to do the deal at "any" price. There is a view that its a buyers market. Its not. Its a sellers market. Good, used stock at the right price is harder to come by than (good) customers.

And lets be honest - you've little leverage. Why should a dealer knock £,£££'s off when you cant buy the car at that price elsewhere anyway from another main dealer?

My son went to buy a 2012 Clio RS200 - looked at two - one at £8995 and one at £8999. I told him i'd get him £500+ off the cars easily. One dealer knocked the £95 off the car "as a goodwill gesture" and the other reluctantly knocked £50 off his.

Yeah, I'll probably just pick the best one and go up there in person. I think they prefer to do things face to face rather than on the phone. No big issue...I don't mind paying top money if the car is prepared properly, it's just always nice to feel you have done well out of the deal too.

Squeeze them hard when you get there and see what happens. Thats what i'd be doing.

Good luck - hope it goes well!

What A6 is it? You can get about £10k off a new one at the moment, might be cheaper going new...

I've often found new Audis often cheaper (with discount) that 6-12 month old ones.

I think you've just answered your own question.

You're not a qualified lead until you turn up and invested some time. I'm surprised anyone offered you anything over the phone.

Go and see them all then sit down with the dealer and make a justified offer on the car you like best. "I know its on at X but I'd like to pay Y because...tyres, stonechips, sagging leather bolster (if an Audi!) etc."

If you know what a good deal is for the car be prepared to accept it or walk away. Leave the door open for your offer to be accepted if you do walk and they might call you back.

I'm in the process of negotiating on a used A6 at the moment, I have managed £500 off and the dealer is refusing to do the transmission oil change (due in a couple of thousand miles) - I guess each car owes them a certain amount, hence the varying discounts.

Best deal i ever got was £2500 of a 335d that was up for £23000 the week between xmas and new yr.

Dealership was a ghosttown and think they were just desperate for the business. Id wait a few weeks if your not desperate, if they getting to the end of the 1/4 and need a sale or 2 to trigger their bonus, they will discount.

Is that from a main dealer?? That's pretty poor not doing the transmission oil change if it's due in a couple of thousand miles, it shouldn't even be part of the negotiation process IMO, when I bought a used BMW from a main dealer they told me that anything that would need doing service wise in the next 6 month would be taken care off
