Hi everyone.

Currently on the look out for a new car as my current one ends in February, having always had fairly powerful bigger saloon cars I really fancy a change.
Luckily having just purchased a new Transit custom for work duties means I can now look at smaller & more fun cars.

The 911 has always been a car I have loved and wanted, seeing the 997.1 in the 20k bracket now is really tempting, my budget is around 22-24k for one, I would ideally like the following;

3.8 engine
2006 +
Manual or Auto

Do you think my budget is cutting it close? I dont want to end up buying a dog but I have seen a few for sale with around 60k or so on the clock with FSH which is ideal.

I will be doing around 5-10k per year in the car, so buying one with lower mileage now will hopefully help re-sale in 2-3 years as it should only have around 75-85k. I have read the common problems on there and generally know what to look for.
Quick question I have is regarding the sports chrono pack, is it worth waiting for a car with it as it seems to have great reviews.

Thanks

Get the manual, get one with Porsche warranty. Great car, you'll love it.

In your OP you said "currently on the look out" and "2006+", changed your mind?

I wouldn't buy a 997.1 without Porsche warranty due to known issues.

I dont like the wheels on that car, which look like copies of the Turbo wheels, the driver's door doesn't look like it fits correctly - has this car been in a crash?

Also it doesn't have full Porsche service history.

I doubt you'd get Porsche warranty with those wheels, but I'd want to get it to an OPC and have them do a 111 point check. I suspect they would find a lot of other problems too.

How does one go about getting hold of a warrantied car - do you have to buy an approved used one from a main dealer, are there still 997s available with a transferable extant factory warranty, or can you buy an out-of-warranty car and then get it warrantied afterwards?

Those wheels look cack, they're not finished in the correct Turbo style.

Whichever one you buy, get the seller to agree to do a 111 OPC check so you can stick a warranty on. Or get a Hartech rebuilt car if you can find one.

Finally, don't get a Tiptronic!

I do want a 2006+ but if a good 2005 car came up I wouldn't turn it down, however newer the better!

I have only seen one 997 which had a hartech rebuild, it was a cabrilet priced around 25k which I thought was reasonable. I am not in a massive rush once my current car goes back so I might hang about until I find one which has had the work done, do they essentially eliminate the regular problems?

Having looked in to warranties I was quoted around £650 a year, seems a lot but on the other hand could be worth factoring in?

Quick question, are the cabriolets harder to sell on do you think?

You want one in the best condition, a newer year of registration is no guarantee of a better car.

A Hartech rebuilt car will be stronger and more reliable than the original.

That sounds cheap, the only warranty worth having is an OPC one. Or if you live near them, get onto the Hartech maintenance plan.

There's a market for both coupes and cabrios, just get whichever one you want.

Hartech rebuilt. Not a fan of front bonnet/bumper or the badge at tea. Could be changed though.

Personally I wouldn't be bothered about sport Chrono unless you're going on a track a lot. Like others have said buy on condition and don't be too prescriptive on spec. I was adamant that I wanted a 3.8 and anything but silver, but ended up with a 3.6 in silver! It drove the best, looked great with turbo wheels and was in really good condition for the money. So many just don't look right when you go and see them. I did stick with Bose though, which is a good call if you like music.

A plus point to factor with the Chrono, is the PSE that comes with.
Er, it doesn't come with it as far as I know.

yeah its weird why Porsche didn't just give you a PSE button, suspect they did if you had PSE but not chrono, the twin exhaust pipe button

was added in 997.2

so ina 997.1 you can have the PSE open, and press the PASM to turn back off the overly harsh Sport damper setting, but you have to keep the reined-in PSM and higher throttle response

from memory PSE cost £1200 and SC cost about £600 when new

The 997.1 is a good car. It just needs Porsche warranty.

I think hartech like them also, as they have built up a fantastic business replacing the chocolate innards that porsche used to take revenge on the west...
