Normally quite decisive when it comes to buying cars but I am a bit wary about a Clio 182.

The car is something that perhaps someone in their late 30's should not be seen in but the car looks pretty good.

Renault Clio 182 Cup

Titan Grey metallic

25,988 miles

1 owner

£2,995

Now the car has one or two issues

It is 11 years old but has not had the timing belt replaced.

It also needs the passengers door repainted for some reason.

Exhausts basically fall apart so a stainless steel would perhaps be required.

The low miles looks great but can this cause other issues?

Any other points I need to check out?

Anyone actually driving a Clio 182 and using it as a daily?

Thanks everyone

That is cheap if that is the correct mileage.

If the belts need doing that's another £600 odd you'll need to pay. They require a specialist tool and these engines are extremely sensitive to timing.

The one you're referring to looks tidy enough, i can't see what's wrong with the passenger door from the pictures (they all look different from the front wings due to the plastic used) although if he's using 'titan grey metallic' that may be the issue as that isn't a clio colour as far as i'm aware.

Belts being done is the biggest issue to look for, check for a crunch going into third as the synchros can go on them. They are pretty bulletproof apart from that and very easy to work on.

I don't drive one as a daily but have had 6 and they would be fine for daily use.

If i was being pedantic i'd also point out that it's not really a one owner car as it was bought pre-registered so will show two owners.

There's plenty aftermarket exhausts out there to replace the aging mild steel one that's on it, i might even have a miltek stainless one in my garage for a 182.

Have a look here - http://www.evo.co.uk/renault/clio/14095/renaultspo...

I own the black car featured in this as it happens. smile

Nice one. I have read that EVO buying checks before when I looked in the past but bottled it.

Must be pretty cool having your own car in the issue when it came out.

Yes noticed the one owner point after reading the advert again. Yes he is doing nothing wrong writing it this way but it should be classified as a two owner car.

Again not too sure buying from someone who seems to be trading from a house perhaps.

Sometimes cars with low miles and a good price are too good to be true.

It must have been a previous owner that had it in the magazine, i bought it and stumbled across the article while looking for something else and was surprised when i seen the reg. Adds to the history of it though so pretty cool that way. The car is turbocharged now with a roll cage, big brakes, coilovers, etc, etc now so it doesn't look much like that now!

Mileage wise i'm not too bothered about low miles with these cars and see it as a nice to have. I have one at 70k miles, another at 142k miles, both feel the same and feel pretty indestructible and they get abused on track. The good news is that they are at a price point that when something costly goes people just break them so every bit that you would ever need to replace is out there and available for buttons.

The seller thing would raise questions but it could be a family member selling it for the elderly relative as it's sat in her garage most of it's life and now she can't/won't drive, or of course it could be something more sinister. A quick conversation with the seller should give you a good idea which.

Where abouts are you out of interest, are you local to the car?

Ahh cool. Still as you have said must have been a shock seeing the reg plate in a magazine when the car was in your drive way. As you have said adds to the history.

142,000 miles is impressive in a Clio 182. I think many have the idea that they are rubbish in the build compartment and this was the worry about it being a daily drive. But speaking to someone like yourself who has had a few it does put your mind at rest.

Personally I have had 3 Clio William's in the past. Two Williams 2 and a Williams 3. Loved the cars and even now they were on the top of the cars I have owned.

Yes the seller point is worrying me a bit. If you click on the sellers name he has another two cars for sale. So he is a trader which it does state in his advert.

I am pretty local to the car. North East of Scotland and the car is about 90 miles away.

Only issue is I don't have a car at this moment in time. biggrin

Definitely works as a daily driver, if you can find a good one and are happy to do some preventative maintenance now and again.

I'm lucky enough to own a lovely Racing Blue 182 and use it as my daily. Mine is low mileage having just ticked over 45k miles and it's been 100% reliable. Granted I do all my own servicing and maintenance and it goes up on the ramps every few months for me to clean underneath it and check it over. I'm quite OTT and it's always kept washed, clayed, polished and waxed and is completely pampered. Previously I had a silver 172 which I kept for 5 years and also used as my daily. It never once broke down or let me down.

Oh and I'm 40 years old hehe I don't care what anyone thinks, each to their own of course, but I love hot hatches and the Clio is so entertaining to drive on my shortish B road commute.

I'm fairly local as well so if you want someone to come and have a look at it with you just let me know and I'd be happy to come along with you to check it over.

I've had these cars apart and back together again more times than I care to remember so have a good idea what's what. smile

Hi mate.

Great to hear. I know after having a few Williams that looking after the car is a must but many German cars which I have had were worse.

I am a lover of a good hot hatch. The more I drive other cars the more I want to go back to a car like the 182.

Great to hear someone taking as much care as you have on your motor. Makes a huge difference to the running of a car if you just do that extra bit smile

Again thank you so much for posting smile

Honestly mate that is extremely good of you. I very much appreciate the offer.

Going to phone today and find out the score regarding the issue with the door and the wrong paint description.

Will revert back with my findings biggrin

Hi mate.

Had to put it on hold as I am not 100% sure if myself and my fellow workers will still be in work or not.

Company cutting back so will wait until the end of next week to see what is happening.

Will let you know if I go see it smile

Mine was great fun.

However I hope things work out for you and a Clio can be back on the cards.

I'll go against the grain here and say I wouldn't have bought that Clio. Sure it's low mileage. That is great if you are a collector and want a car in near "immaculate condition" but:

-The cambelt has been skipped on 2 times. What else has been skipped on?
-IME things that have seen very little use soon become a pain. Read my Escort thread. Alot of the issues on that were down to a lack of use (A Leda damper blew itself to bits within 1k of me driving it. Before that? 3,000 miles in 10 years on them....
-Besides the exhaust needing mounts I reckon the costs would soon add up. Tyres would be very old for example and on a Clio a fresh set makes a massive difference. That's before I talk about other rubber parts etc. I know mine with 72k had the ARB bushes perishing despite there being no play present.

A friend of mine bought a 106 Diesel because it had super low mileage, 29,000 miles with every MOT from new to be exact. Within a year he was looking and brake lines detaching (they were original), driveshafts groaning, tyres being 14 years old all round which made for interesting handling and so on. It was a very tidy car mind you! My tattier 106 GTi? Almost none of those issues and I put on 14k in that time. I don't think his previous 106 diesel was that bad either compared to his low miler.

Hi mate.

Yes very good points regarding the lack of use. My mate bought a Escort RS Turbo Series one back in the day which only had 22,000 miles. As you have stated the car was on original rubber and basically it needs near recommissioning.

I suspect the Clio might not be quite that bad but for the passengers door to require painting as well as the cambelt as you have mentioned not being done it does point to a car that has not exactly had much love.

Also when reading the MOT and it states the following it seems to me that the one lady owner had little regard for the car.

nearside rear Tyre has a cut in excess of the requirements deep enough to reach the ply or cords (4.1.D.1a)
offside rear Tyre has a cut in excess of the requirements deep enough to reach the ply or cords (4.1.D.1a)

The seller is a dealer and the car for the miles is pretty cheap which points to more underlying work needing done.

I am sure if he was confident with the car he would fix these issues and stick a much higher selling price on the advert.

Anyway if things calm down with work it still maybe worth a look but with the understanding that the car would need £2,000 to make perfect.

Thank you mate for your very wise points regarding the car smile

If you haven't got one yet contact me. My friend is selling his. It's an absolutely fantastic car, well looked after by a keen enthusiast. Probably in your price range too and won't need any work.
