I have slowly come to the realization that I prefer autumn and winter driving despite only ever driving with the roof down.

The summer has too many drawbacks for me with overcrowded roads, idiotic driving (seems to worsen as the temperature increases), sun burn without knowing and the fking tree outside the house which deposits sap on my car the very next second after I have washed and dried the paintwork. All this conspires to spoil the odd moment when everything comes together and I have consequently hardly used it at all this summer.

Winter driving on the other hand is one of the great pleasures in life. Starting the engine up on a crisp winter morning and filling the air with decibels and the lingering smell of V power, exhausts burbling through sleepy villages, the smell of open fires emanating from the many country pubs and houses, dappled sunlight and then opening the taps down the many B roads linking the next one and starting all over again.

Am I mad or do any other PHers share my sentiments?

Anyway a picture is worth a thousand words so here is a pic of my coldest journey (5.5 degrees) so far this year.

Roof down clear roads and some cool brisk air is a delight. That's why I never sorn my weekend car too. Night time winter driving is also fun at 6 or 7/10ths.

With a hat, scarf, thick coat and gloves (& ear muffs for the wife), why not!? biggrin

For me, summer evenings still provide the best roof down experience though.

100 percent agree.

Off topic, where did you buy your car from as it's identical to 2 I've owned and still miss!

Gloves are a definite even at 40mph in the depths of winter hehe.

The only other nutter open top motorist I saw was a black 350Z which sounded rather excellent.

You are going to hate me for asking this, but why do people like you have the car manufacturer name on the registration?

Can't remember the name of the garage. It was in Croydon though.

People like me? wink.

I like the balanced look of a 3-3 plate (even more 2-2 and 1-1 though they are rather cost prohibitive) and I find that car related plates are more fitting to a reg and less pretentious than the initials of the owner.

How do you know my initials aren't BMW anyway? hehe

I find night/evening drives with the roof down brilliant all year round, for the reasons you list above!

It's a bit like going skiing. Why choose to do something that makes you colder in the winter?

Yes, like you because you have it on your car. smile

Fair point, you may have BMW as initials. Just wondered why people do this. To me, it's like another badge. Some cars don't let you forget who made them.

Nice looking car, by the way. What engine etc. is it?

Sorry, is the the Z4M?

I took my caterham out the other day and really enjoyed it , it was a tad cold but I quite enjoy driving in a thermal hat , it makes you realise your actually travelling and not rapped up in a tin top with the climate on 25 degrees , so yes it is enjoyable , rain on the other hand forget it !

Perfectly sane. It was wonderful this morning, although it took a while to deice the roof :-)

Mrs's MR2 has a hard top that we fit when the weather turns, I like it as it changes the feel of the car. First convertible, not that bothered to be honest. A lot of the appeal seems to come from it being a bit grim with the roof up.

My wife has a Mk3 MX5 and since having a baby nearly 3 months ago she's taken possession of my Accord estate so I've been enjoying the Mx5, even if it is just up and down the motorway. I try to get the roof down whenever possible. We had a works do on Friday and rather than drinking I opted to drive, I left Swansea at midnight heading to Bridgend with the roof down, heating up full, heated seats on, clear starry night and a shooting star to top it off. You do get some funny looks especially when it's dark but I love it.

I much prefer a very early Summers morning to a Winters day but I get it.

Weather and salt permitting I will be out on the weekend for a blast of cold air.

It's a good tonic for me and it's good for the car. I don't want to go down the SORN route.

A couple of pics from the back end of last winter on some recognisable empty roads.

With you all the way on winter top down motoring. My Elise has never had its roof on since the day I bought it smile
Mind you it does live in the garage!

Don't agree about summer though frown . It's just as good only different.
