Funny how so much can pivot around the actions of one man. He was exiled, then returned, then achieved independence, democracy, stability, investment......

And then in other cases it gets squandered. He was both wise AND decent.

This has been bubbling for weeks. Thomas Cook and the FCO were slow on the uptake. Know a Gambian taxi driver and he reckons yet another coup or civil war is on the way.

Troops from a neighbouring nation are forming up on the border by all accounts, in case he refuses to step down. Ugly business.

The Medical Research Council has a huge research facility in The Gambia http://www.mrc.gm/ They pulled their staff out about three weeks ago! One of my mates worked for the MRC in "The G" for about five years....I visited a couple of times. Great place and lovely people....Jammeh has always been a nutter...on one of my visits there were roadblocks everywhere as he was refusing to pay the army and worried about a Coup. In shocking news other governments have been turning a blind eye for years...

This guy was on Sky news, he has fled Gambia in the last couple of days, but unfortunately was unable to take his wife and young child with him and is now very concerned at what will happen to them.

There must be more to that story
