I want to upgrade the head unit on my 2007 987S. I am way out of touch with today's ICE so would be grateful for your input. The unit I keep coming back to is the Alpine INE-W925R, I'm not sure exactly why but it does have everything I need. ie. Sat Nav, Bluetooth, MP3, DVD etc. which, I know, a lot of HUs have.

Can anyone suggest an equal or better HU in the same price range (or cheaper) and what adaptors, fascia plates etc. I would also need. My system is non-Bose.

Thanks, Martin

Take a look at my old post here. I still recommend Pioneer as the best sounding head units with very good nav too. Their new units with Apple CarPlay etc are worth looking at.

Thanks for the reply.

So I've had a look at some Pioneer units and quite like the Pioneer Avic F80DAB. Will this fit ok and do you know if I will need anything else to go with it?

The double din units are a standard size so it will fit. Don't know what the wiring loom looks like but you may need to get a wiring harness specific to 987. Non Bose is easier than Bose which was very different. Get some advice from Car Audio security. They can supply and fit the unit too I think.

Kenwood dab with Garmin nav fitted in mine. Has an sd card slot up to 32gb for mp3 music. Kenwood supply a fitting kit specific to the 987.

Hehe I put a Pioneer in your former vehicle! The basic head unit was the one area in which I disagreed with your otherwise splendid spec smile

Hmm! decisions, decisions.

Whichever unit I go for, will I need all of this...

You will be needing these 3 things to change the radio,
Facia - http://www.carcommunications.co.uk/connects2-doubl...
Arial Adapter - http://www.carcommunications.co.uk/connects2-ct27a...
Stereo wiring - http://www.carcommunications.co.uk/navtv-most-bose...

I know I will need the fascia kit but if I have to shell out another £400+, I don't think I'll bother.

Magic. The reason I specced the basic unit was because I planned to upgrade it to a pioneer like you have done... Great minds!

If you have non-BOSE (so basic or Sound Package Plus) you don't need an adapter. You will need to send a switched 12v to the amp in the frunk if you have Sound Package Plus, however this will also be needed for the headunit anyway. As the Porsche headunit is switched on by the fibre optics in the car, there is no switched 12v by the radio so you will need to run switched 12v from the fuse box.

Many do this through a fuse tap, however I tracked down the BMW part that fits the 987 fuse box so you can have it as if it were OEM (i.e. a normal plug in fuse). Let me know if you want me to dig out the part number (they were peanuts, but Porsche won't sell them to you. BMW however use the same fuse box in some of their models and will sell them smile ).

I tapped the switched 12V from the aircon unit directly below the head unit. Not sure if this is a recommended way to do it, but it worked well for me.

My car is Bose, so I bought an adaptor, although at £150 it was much cheaper than the one linked here! The OP will just need a standard harness at about £20.

Thanks for your comments guys. I now have a Pioneer AVIC-F80DAB ready for installation. I still need a fascia plate but the only one I can find comes with this kit...CT23PO03. I'm pretty sure I don't need the mounting cage and other bits & pieces so can I just get the plate separately? Are there alternatives?

Pioneer do a facia plate in black or grey. I got the grey one from Car Audio Security. You may need to call them if you cannot find it on their website.

Thanks Animal, I contacted them band they said:-

"If you have a Pioneer stereo, the cage would be too large to fit this fascia. You would require the complete kit, this also allows you to adjust how the stereo sits, in, out or flush."
