Hi,

I have 13-plate Octavia VRS TSI (Mk3 model). Recently the temperature never gets up to its usual 90deg. The car warms up quickly (i.e. normally), but the water temperature only ever gets to between 65-80deg (depending on use) and oil temperature never goes above about 85 deg.

My initial diagnosis is faulty thermostat - but I know there have been issues with temperature senders in the past. Any improvements on my guess? I have VCDS to monitor temp blocks etc if necessary (not yet used)...

Thanks in advance!

Once up to normal temperature, eg after 7 miles or so, if you leave the car idling, does it reach the normal 90c? It does sound like a thermostat issue. You could try the temp sensor first as it's easier and cheaper than doing the stat, well it was for my tfsi GTI, but turned out to be the thermostat in the end. £200 at a specialist including fitting. When my stat went I would reach 90c sat in traffic but as soon as you got any air flow through the engine the needle would drop to about 60c even though I knew the engine was warm. It def ran better with new stat and mpg improved.

Replace thermostat.

Not sure on the TSI engines but the TFSI had a secondary thermostat in the case of DSG cars which was not well documented until fairly recently.

Use genuine parts ;-)

PS. not sure if it's similar to on my Scirocco but the thermostat was a pain in the arse.

Bought new thermostat from TPS, stupidly didn't look in the box, the thermostat is ONLY included. Seal is not included, seperate part number.. so had to do mine twice.

It's built into the waterpump on some TSIs, which is even more of a ball ache of a job than the older engines.

Yep, temperature goes up when stationary, and down when driving...

Unusual it comes up to temperature (albeit a low one) quickly though if the stat is stuck open(?).

VCDS gives a G62 fault - which apparently can be due either to a faulty thermostat, or the sensor itself. Will do some logging.
