Apologies if there has been a thread on this previously, I'm sure there has, but I didn't have much joy from the search

What's the PH take on the minimum amount of sleep needed to be able to function properly? I know there are plenty of studies out there but they all seem to state something different, anywhere from 5 to 9 hours. I tend to find that I can feel more tired after 10 hours sleep than I can after 6 but I think that is linked to to how deep a sleep you fall in to.

The reason I ask is because I'm currently studying but also working long hours so it's become a case of getting up at 4ish to study before heading out to work, which usually means around 5.5 to 6 hours sleep a night. Is this sustainable in the long term or will I find myself not able to perform everyday tasks at the same level I would on my normal 7 or 8 hours sleep?

Depends on your physical activity levels I'm guessing , over the days if you don't fuel enough you will burn out. I've done 35hrs straight, running for 29hrs solid, fueling every 30mims. I used to get 4hrs sleep a night for 3-4 weeks then have get 18hrs to recover

Get as much as you can! Testosterone is produced while you sleep so no sleep = no testosterone. It's been a long time since I studied this but If I remember peak production was around 8 hours and then it started to decline.

Objectively people secrete testosterone at much the same rate unless they're a genetic freak or suffer from hypo-gonadism. I acknowledge that you feel fine, my point is that your t-levels might not be as optimal as they could be.

Depends on activity level, age, weight, general fitness - and the fact that everyone's different !. Most people I know get about 6 hours sleep, which has been adequate for many years.

I work nights and get about 5-6 hours sleep. Days I get about 10 hours, but can end up feeling the same, still tired.

there is a sleep bank, which allows you get less sleep and make it up later.

I know some guys at work who live off 3 hours sleep maybe less.

Feel more tired after 10 hours? In one go? How is that possible?

The whole concept is over rated if you ask me its why they invented caffeine!

Yes I have a 3 year old and a one month old zzzzz.

I do find it's possible to actually feel worse after a longer sleep, but possibly not 'tired' as such. If I get my normal 6 hours sleep and then get up I feel fine all day. If I doze on for another couple of hours before finally getting up I feel comparatively lousy all day.
