Winter tyres - wear
Discussion
I've just bought a new pair of rear Sottozeros for £650. I had my winter wheels fitted a few weeks ago. This is their sixth winter. I was a bit wary of the rears as they are down to 4mm and unlikely to work well if it snows here or I take the car to the Alps. I have bought new tyres though because they have been very slidey over the last couple of weeks - much more so than the Corsas!
An incident yesterday prompted me to stop prevaricating and buy new rears when I had to brake hard as somebody stepped out at a crossing and the car slid along, with ABS activating and my managing just to stop in time.
I shouldn't be surprised as advice generally is that winter tyres lose their efficiency at higher tread depths than summers and the compounds go off over time. I don't think any of you running these would need to be warned, as the lack of grip is very obvious.
