Current car- X-type 3.0 auto SE. I have just started a new job, meaning a much longer cross-town commute. While the Jag is perfectly good on fuel on the motorway, round town its abysmal, as the transmission only has lockup in 4th and 5th above about 35mph.

I'd like a saloon or estate, similarly comfy, minimal sporting pretensions, at least a [i]bit[/bit] of poke, and significantly better fuel economy. Ideally another Petrol Auto but I don't think that is possible, so I'd rather give up and admit defeat and go diesel.

So who does a combination of a decent diesel engine, and a decent autobox? For about £2500.

Volo autoboxes blow up, ford diesel engines are crap, VAg multitronic boxes are crap and I'd really rather not have a VW or Audi.
Anything BMW seems way overpriced.

So far my leader is a Citroen C5 Hdi Auto - something like this

Alternatives being maybe...

Saab 9-3 or 9-5 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-Saab-9-3-Vector-1-9...
Vectra with the 1.9Cdti - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-Vectra-1-9CDTi-...
Mercedes C220 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-Mercedes-Benz-C-Cla...

Any thoughts? Ideally I'd like something a bit lower miles than I'm used to as I'm going to be doing a lot more miles than I have previously.

ETA - I do have another car, I am not at all interested in sporting pretensions - the quieter and comfier the better. I am presuming the Merc will have the best box and also maybe the only option with a petrol engine that might be good enough piggy and fuel, the, C180supercharged models.

The Mercedes C Classes are a good car.

For me the 270 is the better engine it has a bit more grunt whilst being just as good on fuel as well as responding well to a map (giving better fuel) make sure you get the gearbox fluid & filters changed.
