I'm thinking of getting a 53 plate Allroad, the 2.5 TDI version. It'll be a third car for carrying a dog and getting me down the lane in winter. The car I'm thinking of looks in good nick, is sensible mileage (125k) and has all the kit, including low ratio box.

Anyone got experience of these good or bad?

Thanks

Hi mate, I have had mine for about 18months. On 132k now. I love it overall, but it can cost a few pennies putting things right. I am about to get timing belt done on mine. I recently had passenger window regulator replaced, and big service. Touch wood all is well for now.

Thanks. This one has had cam belt and air suspension done. I understand that the latter is a weakness.

When I bought my one the seller had recently replaced level sensors, both front bags and the compressor. However over the winter mine has been dropping at the rear, normally during a cold night. I have a feeling the n/s/r bag has developed a leak. I have a May 2005 so I assume one of the last models. I really like it, soaks up the bumps and I have averaged 29.2 since I got it. What's the going rate for one these days?

It's the suspension that worries me. Seller wants £3k but it will be serviced and come with nearly new winter tyres. The driver's window doesn't work, so need to price that up or get it fixed.

I think the suspension is not as bad as expected, it's just more expensive than a standard setup to replace,I will let you know how I get on replacing rear bag and 3k sounds about right; I wld most Likely advertise mine for a similar price.

If you want to know why the extra cost of running an Allroad is worth it, watch this:-

I have one and it's been a superb car. Very versatile, with a large load carrying ability.
I've spent a lot on mine and have replaced the front airbag suspension as the car used to drop overnight.

They can be heavy on bushes etc - I replaced a lot of mine with Meyle HD stuff - worth the extra cost.

They can let rain water in from the scuttle panel so be sure to check for dampness in the passenger and rear passenger footwell.

Engine wise, try and get the later BAU engine codes as they had better valve gear/cams to get round the wear issues.

Make sure they have XL tyres on and pref. Matching tyres.

I had mine remapped for a bit of extra poke, well worth it and at the same time I had my EGR valve mapped out.

All in, they are an excellent car but do require a fair bit of maintenance..

Worth checking the air suspension works properly, you can get compressor rebuild kits fron bagpipeandy on ebay.. just £25..

Sadly, mine is for sale after I have spent all the money on it [on flea bay] now as I have an A8 BUT and it's a big but I'm not sure whether I have made the right choice!!

Good luck, pretty sure you won't regret buying one smile

I've had a couple of A8s. They are great cars and superb in the snow.

I read somewhere that you can replace the air suspension with normal set up. Anyone know who makes this, cost etc?

I read somewhere that you can replace the air suspension with conventional set up. Anyone know the supplier, cost etc?

I did that, from a US outfit called Blau. Very helpful, good kit, but the car not the same afterwards and sold it a few months later.

Well I've bought it. Collect it Monday. It's having new drop links fitted to front suspension this weekend and an MOT Monday.

Hope it snows bad this winter! Don't like taking the XFR out in snow, even though it has winters on it. The Audi will piss it!
