After a few years of not riding I was looking at new bikes like triumphs & ducatis but they didnt do anything for me and I decided I would like to build my own Cafe Racer/Bobber/Scrambler over the winter .. I keep changing my mind on which tyre though

So I bought an old BMW R100RS airhead and have set to work stripping down, the chassis was powder coated 10 yrs ago and is in good condition , the tank is being de rusted with acid currently, the wheels off for powder coating.

So skinny tyres 1000cc and 70bhp should be enough to scary the st out of me down the Fosse way

Will post some more as it gets built up

Very cool bike with a legendary fairing and iconic paintjob, kind of a shame to chop it up and throw exhaust wrap at it.

yes I'm with you on that! Cafe racers may be fun and interesting but they don't warrant the ruining of a true classic! yikes

Seriously do not butcher an RS into a cafe racer... It's your bike and your money so can do as you please but this is an iconic BMW, especially in that beautiful (and rare) colour

Agreed but do it out of an r65/r80 not an r100rs ! I had an r100rs in that same paint scheme btw .

The BMW Café Racer thing has been done to death.

Like the others have said, would be nice to keep this original especially as that model was considered special in it's own way at the time - wasn't it the first production bike with a full fairing?

First production bike with a wind tunnel developed aerodynamic fairing.

It was. Whilst the fairing on it looks fairly tame by modern standards, at the time it was released having a fully aero, wind tunnel tested fairing like this was utterly remarkable. If you read some of the contemporary reviews and previews etc journalists genuinely didn't quite know what to make of it. As I said, a truly iconic bike with a fantastic paint scheme. Would be a real shame to see this chopped up into yet another BMW 'cafe scrambler' etc

Please don't do it.
So many BMWs have fallen to this abominable fate.
I have just read a magazine dedicated to this heinous pass time, Built Handcrafted Motorcycles it is called. I guess nothing is new though, because in the sixties, this is exactly what we used to do!

Regarding the wind tunnel comment; That may have been Moto Guzzi - seeing as they had a wind tunnel from about 1951.

That BMW was a lovely bike before some bearded hipster went for the latest fashion style to no doubt mathc his beard, skinny jeans and flat soya latté made with organic ferret droppings.

Seriously, find a proper shed of a bike to make into your mid life crisis, not this one.

G'Day Mate that was a hot day ! I got bored of riding tbh 200 miles a day into London it became a chore not a pleasure ! Had some women nearly kill me & starting working to hard for a living hence the riding ceased

Anyway I took the advice of PH BB above ! wink

Fully stripped

It's only a motorbike.
Crack on, whatever makes you happy.

It's not the fking mona lisa, just a tatty old mass produced BMW.

Not like those prats who abused that Desmo for a flat track racer.

So which production guzzi had a full fairing prior to the r100rs ?
