I've noticed a very annoying noise coming from the dash of my 987 boxster, sounds like it's from the right hand corner of the dash perhaps where if meets the cover on the windscreen pillar.

The noise seems to come on after a while driving with heaters on full so I guess something is expanding and rubbing.

The noise is kind of creaky more than rattley but hard to say for sure as trying to pinpoint it while driving is difficult.

I've tried poking rubber packing in various places with no joy.

Anybody had similar and solved it, how hard is it to get the plastic section at the top of the dash to the windscreen off?

Cheers in advance.

I had a similar sound that seemed to come from the bottom corner of the windscreen and sounded like it was inside the car. Turned out the plastic cowl that attaches to the outside of the windscreen (into which the windscreen wipers go) has a bolt on either side hidden under a plastic flap. The nut had come loose and once I tightened it the sound went away. It's a 2 minute job and easy to check as a first port of call.

Thanks John, this sounds easy to check so I will but I forgot to add, if I force my hand into the gap between the door top and the edge of the dash the noise quietens / goes altogether.

Right, in that case it's unlikely to be what I've suggested. I've got a Cayman but I think it's about the same - is this the general area? The two pieces of plastic you can see there can be levered off with a trim removal tool but beyond that I've not been in there I'm afraid (most of the trim rattles I've encountered are in the rear hatch area).

Creaking and rattle noises can travel, and are not always in the direction it sounds from.

I was convinced I had a creaking noise coming from the near side of the dashboard. Raikku at Waff Zuff said I needed my ears tested as it was "definitely" coming from the off/side.

Turns out it was in the middle. At the top. In the courtesy light assembly.

Thanks for your replies.

John, I'll have a look at those plastic pieces at the end of the dash, I looked to see if I could get them out but didn't want to break anything.....

Glassman, I'm pretty sure it's from the end of the dash as I can stop it by forcing my hand between the door and the dash, my wife seems to agree as can hear it from the same area even from the passenger side.

So the noise continues to drive me insane whenever I need the heaters on full....

I've prized of the plastic trims from the end of the dashboard to no avail.

I'm beginning to wonder if it is something in the heater vents or ductwork, anybody ever removed the vents, is it a difficult job?

Weather has recently been warm enough to knock the heating down to 20 odd and no noise, if it's on full for a decent length of time it comes back.
