Can anyone offer experience in terms of fitting a race type seat suitable for sprints and hillclimbs into a Vixen S3.

I've been looking at various options from very expensive Cobra Racer-pro FIA to used seats from a MX5, and lots in between. It would be helpful to know of specific seats that owners have already fitted and therefore know are suitable. It does not need to be FIA approved but I need a seat with a head restraint that is within 5cm's of helmet. Unfortunately this rules out my standard high back Vixen seat as the head restraint is to low.

Just to add complexity, it needs to work with the standard 3 point belt. Therefore high sides are a no no.

Seats I've been thinking of so far include :

Cobra Racer-pro - http://www.cobraseats.com/racer-pro.asp
Cobra Classic RS - http://www.cobraseats.com/classic-rs.asp
TVR Griffith / Chimaera std seat
MX5 seat - not sure which version(s) fit - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAZDA-MX5-MK2-2-5-S-VT-B..._trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=C5jB%252FkCT04BJbf8j36iAUf0yo5E%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Land Rover Discovery 3rd row seat - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/332071040484?_trksid=p20...
Lotus Exige/Elise - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272507325267?_trksid=p20...
Caterham / Westfield - ?

Any help appreciated.

Elise gets the 'yes' from me too.

How tall are you? That will determine whether a fixed headrestraint chair will fit.

How about TVR Tuscan seats or Sagaris 'Teddy Bear Ears'?

Expensive though, but then again so are the Elise ones!

MX-5 ones do fit and are comfortable. Bit more support than the 'armchair' style ones in the Chim, Grif, S, Wedge. They have very high bases though so moddin grequired.

Period looking seat that provides good lateral support and fits in a Vixen or an M even with a full cage. Downside is price, upside is it's a quality race seat that does what a race seat should.

I'm 6 foot. I do like the Elise seat. It looks great in the Chimp. I'm just concerned that the wide part of the seat back (at the shoulders) would be too wide for the Vixen. Any chance you could you measure it for me.

The Cerbie seats (and other TVR used examples) are a nice option but fetch very high prices often in poor condition, so I think an Elise or Cobra is the way to go.

TVRMS - The Cobra Historic is the same as the Racer-Pro but a slightly different pattern trim - nicer actually so thanks for that. It maybe the best option so far but at £500 new, would like to find a 5 year model being replaced. Great to know it fits the Vixen though as I had thought the shoulders may be too wide.

I've just been told of an 'extra high' high back Vixen seat - never seen or heard of one before. Have seen a photo and it's identical to the standard high back but taller. Maybe a purer option.

Does it fit with a cage and how does it work with a harness?

I removed the existing runners, made up a simple steel framework to bolt the seat direct to the floor in the correct position.
This gives me mixed and headroom, about 3 inches above my head to the roof and I am 6 foot three . Plenty of room for a helmet.

As per previous post, the width of the seat across the shoulders is 490mm.

I may have a spare Elise seat in black in the loft which i used in my previous chimaera, I will try this for a size sometime.

I assume that the Elise seat backs don't tilt forwards? Makes it a bit of a bugger if you have a spare wheel in a road car.

But does it fit with a cage and how does the harness get around the seat shoulders. OP needs a seat for competition so guess this is a big consideration..

I use the standard seatbelt for the road and a four point harness for track days.

The belts are hanging behind the seat and I just pull them through and they sit neatly over my shoulders when in use.

The seatbacks are fixed on these as all the Elise a new Exiges.

Thx Bill. Would you be able to post a picture of the seat in situ?
